I have 2 10g tanks and 20g tank. I was using some sort of solar heater for my tank. But, I can't be turning that on when I am sleeping and it's pretty chilly at night. I bought this $14 heaters from topfin. It was 25w and I used it for 30mins on my 10g tank. I notice it didn't do good on heating. Only small area was getting warm. So, I am thinking of returning this heater and getting 50w heaters for paying extra $2 more. Also, trying to get 1 more heater for my new 20g tank. 50,75 or 100 should be good? Any help would be tankful.

Besider the heater, you also need good water circulation to spread the water around so that the temperature in the tank can even out.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    I have 2 240L tank and I have a 200W and a 300W heater. I think a overkill for the 300W. LFS said a 150W would be good enough.

Both seems to do the job well in maintaining the temperature at around 26C. However my room temperature does not fall below 18C normally and may be differ in the your area.

Benny is right that you need to place the heater near the an area with high flow. If not then the heat generate will not be well distributed and create temperature gradient especially during veyr cold weather. I put it just beside my filter outlet to ensure good and efficient distribution of the heat generated.

If your water is cool to start with, please ensure that you do not have a high wattage heater trying to bring the temperature up too quick.

You need to make sure you are there to set the temperature slowly up. Do not set it and leave it, it would go up pretty quick and then you would end up with dead fish. Once you hit the temp, the system will self regulate and you can relax.
