Why dont just use an eden 316??
Hi guys, setting up a new tank for cherry shrimp, hopefully change to CRS in the future
Am thinking of using the following setup:
40cm or 35cm x 20cm x 25cm Gex tank
Sponge filter x 1
Overhang filter x1 for activated carbon, inlet covered with sponge
Gex substrate (red colour packet)
Air stick for increased oxygenation (heard that shrimp need increased oxygen levels?)
And that's it.
Only going to put moss and maybe an algae ball in, no higher plants
Any suggestions on how to improve/ whether this setup will work?
Was also wondering about chiller.. seems to be necessary for CRS, but it is so expensive
Oh, forgot to mention, was wondering about the Eden 501 filter.. are they much more effective than sponge filters, since the inlet is gonna be covered by a sponge anyway?
They sound very good, but once again... one blue note is really a lot more than the price of a regular sponge filter
Sorry got soooo many questions... *mortified by own noobieness*

Why dont just use an eden 316??
if you can get a chiller it is better for CRs![]()
The eden 316 is an internal filter right? Hmm.. will the motor further heat up the water? Was thinking of external canister also cos it will free up tank space
Also, the Boyu E-05 and Resun CY-20 also seem to be pretty similar to the Eden 501, but cheaper? Hee.. anyone knows price range, where to buy, and if they work well?

An overhang / external is better as it does not occupy more space within your tank...
If possible if you are upgrading try to get a bigger tank for your next project... A bigger tank would be easier to maintain / control your water parameters...
I would also suggest a fan so that you can lower the temp of water...
Buy some good filter media like Biohome... It is more expensive but worth it since you are using a small filter system, it makes sense for you to get this as it can help provide more space for your Beneficial Bacteria to grow...
Hope this helps...
Definitely does help, thanks so much for the input
Yeah, besides the placement of the filter canister, i don't really see a difference between the two filter types.. thought maybe the eden 501 type might perhaps be better in some mysetrious way, since the price is soooo much higher
Chiller would definitely be good... prices seem to run in the hundreds though. Are fans effective enough to bring the water temperature down by about 3 to 4 degrees? Ambient temperature in my room hovers around 28 degress C, while optimum temperature for CRS is 24-26, according to some websites i saw..
I think the difference is one is a external canister & the other is a HOB... In canisters the media is kept in an airtight environment & this can help cultivate BB better... Whereas in a HOB the media is exposed... Normally hobbyists would reccomend using an external canister for a filter system... But there are also people using sumps, IOS & EOS Tanks as well... So it all boils down to individual preference...
Fans are ok for smaller sized tanks but it doesn't necessarily mean it will be able to bring it down to the desired temp because it depends on the ambient temperature... You will also have the problem of topping up the water let say every 03 days (I'm not so sure about this as I'm also using a chiller)
The other thing is that the temp will not be constant as it depends what time of the day it is... It would be higher in the day & lower in the night... CRS prefer to have a constant temp which is why serious hobbyists would use chillers...
