    Hi Isz,
that was a very detailed description of filtering system run in 'series' . i really commend you for the time you took to explain the nitty gritty .. wish i had the extra space and money to do the same thing . it would be very practical as you only need to clean the prefilter and not disturb the bio filter . and the filters can be washed alternatively once every six months.

    Uncle!

    COnfirm will work
But you have to decide if you will want to reduced flowrate (inevitable) or you prefer to run in parallel.
Both have their merits as said earlier. It all depends on your setup.
It is not right to say which is better and which should not be done, coz we all have diff tank requirements.

Ck, as long as you maintain the mechanical (the first) canister well, the bio media can be untouched for a Very long time. [:]

Connecting two working cannister filters in series would make it into a very expensive pre-filter...

It would be quite unusual to clean a cannister filter more than once every two/three months....that doesnt seem too much maintenance..does it..?

the issue is not just abt saving on cleaning part

it is abt preserving the largest amt of bacteria possible intact as possible.

in fact, the mechanical part will need to be cleaned more often to optimise this..perhaps every 1-2mths.

abt pre-filter, if one feels that he/she doesnt need the entire canister for prefilter, then can just use 1/2 of it for mechanical. its flexible.

in effect, we are paying for 2 canisters. correct.
But effects and flexibility doesnt lose out, and sometimes better than using 2 canisters separate. depends on setup.

If want to cut cost, can also get a big china brand canister and use it for the mechanical part. No problem.

i have a full 6litres of Ehfisubstrate in the biological part. I do not ever want to touch it. it is valuable. I conserve it by regularly maintaining the mechanical part.
If using 2 separate, this capacity is compromised.
