Yamatos died easily

why are yamatoes so "easy to die"

Just bought 15 Yamatoes yesterday, but already found 6 dead prawns today. I found only 1, and the rest seems MIA.

In fact before this, I had 7 which died after I forgot to switch the filter for 10 hrs.
I thought nitrite or ammonia may be the problem, but the test kit proved otherwise...

other info
- all my fishes are alive and kicking
- my PH is around 6.3-6.6/kh 5
- 2 ft tank, juwel filter
- tank abt 3 mths old
- plants 3/4 tank - no buble --- strange???
- algae - yes, bright green ones always formed on pebbles and stones.


Anyone with some experience to share?

prior experience tells me that its due to one of the 2 reasons below

1) acclimatization was not done properly..ie shrimps went into the tank directly upon reaching home instead of acclimating the shrimp thru slow addition of tank water
(pardon the spelling error if i got it wrong)

2) too high a temperature. Since you did not state your temp, this is a probable cause.

Agree with Charles, to add, was there any stuff like dry leaf or foam in your plastic bag when you purchase your shrimps? It was meant for them to cling on during transport or they will get 'sea sick'![] []

jus to add to the climatization process:

always add a leave/plant for the shrimp to cling to when u buy them.. is will reduce transport shock

reach home, float the bag in the tank and every 5-10mins, add tank water into the bag till u achieve 100%

just to add on what was added on, acheive 100% by filling 25% at 15 to 20 mins interval

what is the temp most suitable for yamatoes? mine also die easily ...

it would be 26-28 *c..... but try not to go beyond 30*c

PH.... for me the best would be PH at 7 nuteral zone..... correct me if i am wrong.... but so far mine is OK.

I'm not sure....but mine has been surviving in waters of about 29 - 30°C for the past few months liao...

Zac, how big is your tank?

Mine survive in a 31 degree tank. I'm guessing it's because my tank is large enough (40"x18"x18&quot, that the water below the denser plants are actually cooler by a few degrees.

This 'theory' is partially supported by an earlier thread where it seems that Yamatos survive high temps in large tanks better then in small tanks.

I think yamatos are more hardy than any other fancy shrimps like tiger, bee or cherry red. I got one from the lot I bought with tiger and bee and it is still alive after I put in for a week. My tiger and bumble bee shrimps are not so lucky, I guess they are the weaker ones. A few of them K.O. already. My malayans are the hardy ones. I think I bought abt 22pcs and only 3-4 died due to my rams.

me have a 2 feet tank which has super lousy water conditions...
30 cardinals, 15 green neons, 5 red phantom, 3 black phantom, 3 ottos, 1 upsidedown cat, 40 malayan and 20 yamatoes!

i hardly do water changes and never test water...
temp goes up to 31 in the day...
it is quite heavily planted, eheim 2006 and not using anymore co2.

yamatoes now carry eggs!
i'm so lucky... haha...

Ryan, sorry to burst your bubble, but almost everybody has had yamatos with eggs. It'll be unusual only if your are able to hatch the eggs and bring up the baby yamatos.

yamato young will only survive in brackish water, so it is impossible for yamatos to breed.
also, my yamatos jumped out of the tank. []

ya.... my yamato also got eggs.... fat tummy with grey white dots .... but too bad never seen any hatch eggs at all... maybe all kena eaten by my tetras....

So have anyone really rise any yamato from eggs before????

must say they are great agle eater.... need to get more but no where selling it at the moment. any loabng.... thanks.

i think one of them managed to raise up the baby yamatoes.. not sure which thread isit now..[]

I had 7 Yamato all dead in a month. A number jumped.
A few cases the Yamato will crawl up to the surface and rest itself on the Floating plant petal to be dried !!!! No joke.
They were still active and alive and I pushed them back into the tank.
I think becoz I did not put in airpump.
