hi guys. ever since i started the mini iwagumi tank, i think to have a best effect of iwagumi style, the tank needs to be slightly larger so i bought a 8L cube tank. yesterday went to NA to buy 2 pieces of rock, but only used one, the other's shape doesnt fit well. played around with the arrangements and finally settle with this:

    front:

    left:

    back:

    right:

    top view:

yup. what do you guys think of my hardscape? do you think the substrate is too thick? im planning to use HC as the main plant and dwarf hairgrass planted near the rocks and at the right side of the tank.

personally i think the back and right view looks better
so perhaps you can use it as the front instead

one main thing i feel is that your side and sub stones for the iwagumi are too small compared to the main stone

once planted and grown in the stones will look even smaller than they are now

side stone usually is 1 size smaller than main stone, and sub stone 1 size smaller again

Don't be too anxious to setup the aquarium.. i think you need to head out and do a stone search..
As lee mentioned.. i think additional stones that differ not too greatly in size will definitely help the scape..
    What are your planting plans??

Oh.. by the way, i see you're taking japanese..

oh are you refering to the small isolated stone or those smaller stones im trying to merge to create a base for the larger stone? ya i feel its abit small too but im trying to estimate how big the sub stone need to be. how will it look if i remove the small isolated stone?

i seldom see LFS selling stones of the same type to make it easier to find, only NA so far or seaview. so any other LFS that sells large amount of rocks for easy matching? will only be starting planting next week after my A lvl over(10 days!!!)

anyway, im thinking of using HC at all sides except the small area behind the large stone, which im thinking of using either dwarf hairgrass or Eleocharis acicularis because im worried that dwarf hairgrass will be too short.

ranmasatome: haha thats my sis table btw, although i once attempted to learn japanese but useless with nobody to communicate with.

yup. i get them from NA btw. one large box full of that type of rocks. the only disadvantage is cleaning such rocks. took me almost 2 hrs to clean the soil stuck in the holes and scrub them clean. shall update on this tank after i found a slightly larger sub-rock and planted them. stay tune~

if the water in you place happen to have medium/high pressure, you can just spray it. That what I did with mine, quite fast.

by the way, like the view from left, add maybe couple of medium size rocks would be gread.

due to space constrain, i am thinking of using a clip-on light instead for this tank. is 11W sufficient for HC and hairgrass to creep? also is it possible to switch the 11W tube to other of higher wattage? actually looking for 18W(heard it exist right?) but C328 dont sell them, anyone know where i can find 18W clip-on light?

11W will definitely not be enough for HC to creep...hairgrass should still be ok if you trim often to train it to creep. my 25cm nano cube is running on a 13W light and the HG is creeping despite me not having trimmed it in 2 months (slow growing as it's excel not co2 enriched).

what space constraint are you facing? perhaps you can consider the Dymax light instead of a clip on? it's 13w and has adjustable length so you can easily fit it on your 20cm cube. it doesn't take up more space than a clip-on imo. i also feel clipons will put added stress on 1 side of your tank, and since it's a very small tank it might give way?

But it's a 20 cm tank! If one wants to go on the high side, then one should use a 16 w study lamp with E21 base.

I recommend the new line by Phillips. Rem to get 6500 k cool daylight lamps!

someone once posted in another thread that despite the tank size, hc will need a certain light penetration to creep, regardless of the wpg...i think it was stated there that 18W showed decent results and someone else who tried 13W got it growing up

i dont get the part about using the 13W and adjustable length? i am planning to place the tank on my study table which isnt really big and no place for a table lamp. however, above my table there is a 18W national brand FL which my dad fixed many years ago(DIY) and still working but the colour looks does not really look aesthetically pleasing to me on plants as i tested it on my 10cm cube tank of hc although it is bright thats why i am thinking of using a clip-on. i dont know the specs of the light, but there is something written on it 'FL 20SS D/18 18W DAYLIGHT 1050lm' and its diameter is around 25mm so i believe its a T8 right? regarding those things written, anyone knows what do they mean?

no idea about your FL light, but what i meant about the dymax is that it sits on top of your tank using 2 legs that can slide in and out, thus adjusting the length. it's more pleasing to the eye than a clip on, probably less stressful on your tank and also the adjustable neck of the clipon tends to deteoriate after time and will sag into the water =)
