I'm currently using the 2213 for my 2ft tank, no doubt about Eheim's rating.
With the filter place below, beside or above, all works fine as long as you get the initial start-up is done correctly.Meaning, to have all air in the canister purged out.
As for the 2211, with a 1.5ft tank. it was placed beside and below (never try above) without problem. However, when a chiller is added. It affected the flow rate.Unless you place the filter and chiller besides the tank.

'cause you mentioned you wanted extra power filtration for the plecos
so i didnt mention the 2211 since imho, its not that much more significantly powerful than an eden501, but the price will be significantly more (at least 40% more expensive than the eden?)
imo, the price difference plus the difficulty of starting a classic series filter (vs the eden) makes it a not so good choice
you probably be better off buying an eden and use the money difference on biohome+ or something else
of course thats just my opinion
somebody else might beg to differ![]()

for eheim canister to work at their best, try to put the filter lower than the tank.
one thing bad about eheim classic is that you have to suck from the outlet to get the air out first, because it doesnt have priming.
gwabbie
I heard that since the 2211 or 2213 has the inlet at the bottom of the filter, need not suck at all (need to suck only the first time)...
OK guys.... i am not even more indecisive.
My tank will be 30X30X40 cm (H), thus now I think I can go for 2211 or 2213. Initially, with just 30X30X30, i can only think about 2211 or eden, or else the 2213 will be taller than the tank. But with the 40 cm tank, then it should not be any problem. To complicate my decision further, i heard with the 2211, I need to invest in the taps or valves and media as well. MOney is not so much the issue, it's probably the hassel in fixing the taps with the right size (need to search for taps as well). And oh by the way, someone suggested the 2232 Ecco (*faint*). But I read too much negative issues with the Ecco series that I probably abandon that idea.
THus now, I am more inclined to go with 2213. 440l per hour plus my Eheim Liberty 100 is definitely an overkill...But I intend to keep 3-4 plecos in that tank, so overkill is prob a good option.
ANy comments will be appreciated. Prob need a decision by Monday...

sounds good...heh its what i suggested
its not a must but its good and convenient to invest in the taps for the classic series filters
the 2211 has different sized in- and out- tubes, so you might want to take that into your consideration
Does the 2213 come with taps and media?

If you want something that last longer (relatively)... abandon the 2232 (i had 2 so i know).
If hassle of fixing taps and searching for them is an issue... don't get them, but trust me, you will want to after your first time of changing water or cleaning filter. This will have to be done regardless of whichever eheim classic filter you buy so its of no concern.. its just a matter of do it or don't.
If price point is an issue - abandon the 2211... this thing has the worst price point in all your choices.
If money is of no issue - Then get the 2213, however, i would still tend to go with the eden...mainly for the fact that you will be placing it next to your tank on the same level.
As mentioned classic filters work best with gravity.. i'm not saying the filter won't work.. it will but it will not function to its maximum. Having a difference in height of 5cm is measly for the filter... i would choose the eden purely for its price point and the fact that it is much lower than your tank.
If however, you can find some place that is more significant in height and you wanna buy a filter more also with future planning in mind... then get the 2213.. its quite a no brainer.

wasabi8888,
here's what i did for 2ft tank.
one eden 501 with a pre-filter sponge at inlet.
this lenghtend the time reuired to clean it.
and a eden 316 for mechanical filtration.
if you're keeping plecos over-filtration is always a plus.
they aren't called "sh*t-machines" for nothing!
but the smaller species in the 3" range shouldn't be a problem.

I never understood the whole mechanical and bio filtration thing... why 501 or any other filter such 2 purposes? eden 316 an internal filter?

wasabi8888,
to confuse you further... all filters have capacity for bio and mechanical filtration.
just depends on how you work your routine to maximize its strength.
the eden 501 has ceramic rings inside and a sponge over the impeller.
if used as it is designed it will do both - ceramic ring = bio and sponge = mechanical.
depending on your load you will need to open the filter and clean the sponge.
i put a sponge at the inlet to reduce dirt accumulating in the spong inside the filter.
all you need to do is pluck the sponge off the inlet to clean weekly... much easier.
i can get away with cleaning the cannister for a few months...
the eden 316 has no room for media... only sponge.
so i treat this filter as a mechanical one.
i change the sponge with cheapo third-party wool cut to shape.
this is done once or twice weekly.
it also helps "polish" off the particles suspended in the water.
i have the setup in my bedroom and both filters are silent running.
unless you have the spray bar from the eden 501 over your tank waterline...

wasabi8888, why not use a pre-filter?
My current setup is as follow:
Inlet from tank => Jaqno PF-126 => Eheim 2213 => Jaqno CX-113 => Outlet to tank
Pre-filter(Jaqno PF-126) with coarse sponge (took from my eheim 2213) for Mechanical filtration.
Eheim 2213 filter with EHFI MECH (hollow ceramic)/coarse sponge/ EHFI SUBSTRAT PRO/Fine sponge for Biological filtration.
If you need CO2, CO2 Mixer (Jaqno CX-113). If not, leave this out.
And I have an Eheim control valve to set the flow rate.
OR, just get a control valve to trim the the flow rate...![]()
Cheers,
Redmond
It's a filter without motor, usually connected in series with 'Active' filter (motorized). You can use it as mechanical (sponge) filtration or another bio filter. It's from Jaqno http://www9.ocn.ne.jp/~msjp/page020.html
My tank is 2ft. You can use for 1.5ft too.
I have made some mistake on the sponge media.
Long ago before they introduce ceramic ring and filter substrate, the blue coarse sponge will be use for bio filtration.
As of now, I am using it as a mechanical since I have a few left from my Eheim 2213.
Usually, the the white fine sponge will be ideal for mechanical filtration.
Sorry, hope this will not confuse you further.![]()

I am using the a liberty and a 2211 with substrate for a 1ft. I know that filter must be below water level. This is bc of the prop or impeller. The filter works on a suction method. It work never run at optimal if water level is below you filter height ( i tried with a 2028 and a fgt on the floor, pumped for 2 days and died). As for the chiller, I have no problems with flow rate. My chiller isof course designed for a 2ft tank. Maybe it has something to do with larger pipes.
Anyway, I have used this setup for sometime now and the ammonia content is fantastic. I only cycled ADA for 1 week before everything went in.
As for starting the filter, there is no need to suck even if 2211 does not have primer. If filter is below water level, all you need is for the inflow tube to be in the water. Open the 2211 impeller casing and you will see water start to fill the canister. Close the filter just before it fills. There may be some spillage for the first time but sooner or later you will get the hang of it. You dont even have to turn it upside down or sideways or anything.
Hi
It's great to see your post. Finally someone who has a similar set-up as me.
When you mentioned that the filter must be below the water level, the inlet for the 2211 is at the base right? As long as the water level of the tank does not fall below the inlet of the 2211, that should be ok isn't it?
Besides, My tank will be 40cm height and the 2211 is about 30 cm height, thus water level will always be higher than the filter, is that ok?
