Recommendations for an external filter for 1 ft cube tank

    HI all

I need recommendations for an external filter 1ft cube tank. I am going to use the Liberty 100 (hang on) at the same time as well. The reason for the over filtration is because i intend to keep plecos and they need good filtration.

The current tank has ADA soil and thus rather a lot of mulm has accumulated. Currently, the tank gets cloudy when the fishes disturb the substrate.

I am thinking of buying the Edeb 501 to use together with the Liberty 100.

    Any advice?

an eden's just nice for a foot cube
but taking into consideration the extra needs of plecos.... i think you can use a 2213 for that extra filtration oomph.

Do you know whether the 2213 is of the same size as the Eden501?

    Justin,

    Jeffrey obviously haven't right?

Anyway, the Eheim Classic 2213 is marginally larger than the Eden 501. However, the Eden is very easy to start without much effort to prime it. For Eheim, the upside is spare parts and longevity in usage.

Both are suitable for your tank, but you need to manage the water flow.

Whist you are upgrading the filter, you might want to consider upsize the Eheim Liberty 100 to 200.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Actually no I have not seen it. I have been keeping fishes for only 2-3 years and I have never used an external canister filter. Do forgive me for ignorance.

I did a check on the web:

The Eden is 16.5 cm in height, whilst the 2213 has the dimensions of 160X355mm. I assume that means 35.5 cm in height (twice the height of Eden 501).

    Did i get this right?

you win already loh... Keep asking me to buy more things.

So you think the Eden should be OK right? You know what I have in the tank. (PS: may get the L174 from Fish Haven). When you said manage the water flow. are you saying that canister filters have high flow rates and need to be decreased?

Ya.. of course.. thats why he asked mah..haha..

Anyway.. i don't think it is "marginally" bigger loh... its like 2-3 times bigger...filter media also can put 2-3 times more..

Thats why Lee1224 say got extra oomph mah..

*edit* Jeff.. not saying you're ignorant or even implying that.. don't mistaken Just giving a friendly indirect hint to do a search...Its great you did a check on google...some people don't even care to do that and just expect to be spoon fed all the time..
Anyway... i think its a pretty good investment.. i just got 2 myself..kekeke..
Also.. i think benny asked you to upgrade from liberty 100 to liberty 200.. that means more water flow leh.. how does that imply a decrease in water flow?
I'm not that good in breeding Plecs but from what i see.. most of them enjoy well oxygenated waters and relatively fast flow..

i dont think plecos and ADA soil go hand in hand, as plecos will keep stirring up the soil and its practically hard to maintain a clear tank.
i think they will do better with other substrate.
as for the filter part, i think a eden will do good enough.

you are right about the height part
you did say you wanted extra filatration for a foot cube since taking into account pleco needs
so a 2213 (or equivalent) should be about good
    more media space too

No problem. No offence taken. Daijyobu desu.

When you said you bought 2, which did you buy? The 2213? What's the price for the 2213?

    Oh guys,

One damn important point, the tank is beside my TV and both sits on a cabinet. Thus I cannot risk any leakage from the external filters. Anyone has problems with that? ANything i should take note? I have never used an external filter before thus asking such questions

What are you going to put in the tank?? the L174?? and how many? 1??

For external filters, leakage is always an iminent problem.. it may not happen now but sooner or later...sometime down the road..maybe 3 or 5 or 7 years later.. it will happen one fine day.. just hope it doesn't happen during the time when you have your current setup.

Also.. if you place both the filter and the tank on the same level.. wont the filter (if you get a 2213) tower over your 1ft cube?? external filters work better when they are set up and placed somewhere below or at least lower than the water level that is in your tank.

Currently i have 2 small Ap Agassizii Tefe, 4 clouds, 1 L27 and 1 L236 in the tank. I will be removing the 4 clouds and maybe the Aga Tefe at some point in time. I know the L27 is not suitable as it can grow big. Well, it's still pretty small now, so I can do that later.

You are right. It will tower over the 1ft cube tank. SInce that is the case, the choice is obvious, I will go with the Eden 501. I am sure with the Liberty 100 (actually I have an additional sponge filter inside the tank), the filtration should be ok.

3 filters for 1 ft cube tank should be more than sufficient.

For the leakage part, that is a concern. Just have to cross my fingers and hope it does not happen soon. Don't have much choices except to place on the table. If I could place it below somewhere else, I would have gotten the external canister long time ago.

    Hi all

    Need advice again.

As I mentioned earlier, my substrate is ADA due to the fact that is was an Apisto breding tank. But the substrate is really irritating and does cause my Liberty 100 to clog rather easily.

I am thinking of changing the substrate and adding the eden 501.

Can i fish the plecos out and change the substrate? I am worried about a few things

    1. CHoice of substrate
    2. Will the PH difference between the ADA soil and new substrate stress the fish? I know it will, acclimitization should solve that right?

Can I ask why no one suggested the 2211? I just saw it at NA. Thought it was rather ideal. Can it be place next to the tank instead of below the tank?

I think it's either because it is not advertised on the Eheim Asia Pacific website and no one knows
OR, people who knew about it also know that it has low flow rate. (especially if you add a chiller/pre-filter/post-filter/DIY CO2 reactor).

But if you are not attaching any "add-ons" to the filter. I don't see why not.

It comes with a base which the canister can seat on it nicely beside your tank. And it's quite silent during operation.
    Cheers,

    Redmond

    2211 is great for 1ft - 1.5ft.. actually... i use it for 2ft. for shrimp/betta tanks...
can definitely trust the rating. used under the tank.

When you said that you used it under your tank, does that mean that i cant put it next to the tank? I measured the height of the 2211, its about the same height of the 1 ft cube, meaning to say, the water level will be BELOW the top of the 2211. I managed to have a glance of the manual and it warned against setting at the same level of the tank which is so in my case. I asked the LFS owner and his answer was that it's ok. It's only at the initial start up that it has to be below. After the water starts running, you can even put it above the tank. Any truth to this?
