I am planning to mod the light unit of my Juwel Rio 125 from 2x18W T8 to 2x28w T5. i'll be using Juwel T5 which is 59cm long and 28W as i do not want to cut more hole to accomodate the normal 24W which is only 54cm.

My plan will be as follows:

    - replace T8 end caps to that of T5
    - replace e-ballast, but what rating should I use? And since the ballast will be enclosed, which is the brand that gives out least heat?

Hmmmm....how about NO T5 e-ballast? Anyone knows the rating?

Not too sure about modifying the lightset. If I recall correctly, the ballast is sealed in the Multilux casing. Once opened, it's quite impossible to seal back.

Have you considered getting the T5 multilux set for your tank? It's can be ordered locally.

I remember you responded to my query many moons ago on modding it. Then i was assuming that the 24W T5 has the same length as th 18W T8. But i stop the mod after learning that they are of different length as i do not wish to cut more holes to accomodate the end caps.

Now with the availiable of 59cm T5 couple with very itchy hands and a serious urge to take a peek into the multi lux shell, I really hope to mod the darn shell. i believe the shell are fasten by 4 hot seal plastic rivets. I plan to drill through them(refasten with plastic bolt and nuts...he...he...) and there after i should be able to remove the 2 end support before sliding the cover out to reveal the inside to satisfied my urge....fetish?
Hmm.....maybe i should talk to Joey?

Benny, I was the one posted here on the available of Juwel T5 light set remember? But ex leh and no fun too.

I remember about you posting it Joe. Which was why I was puzzled about you wanting to modifying it now.

I suppose there's no harm in trying and if it does not work, then get the original Juwel option.

You are right about the plastic rivets. I have previously seen a shop call That fish and pet place in Hougang modifying the standard T8 option to PL. The cosmestic side of the modification ain't exactly what I call pretty. Not something I am confident in using for my tank. Expose wires and water just don't mix in my opinion.

Let's see if the replacement sockets will fit the current casing so that the complete light set can sit flush with the panels.

Do keep us posted on this if you are going ahead with it. I'm definitely interested.
