Driftwood plus plenty of plants...dwarf cichlids tend to be a bit shy..give them lots of hiding place. []

My apisto are never shy...they can come up to the surface of the water when u're around. Once they get use to u're presence it's okay already.

Some fishes are less shy when they know there is a place they can hide if the need arises. Initally, they will observe you from there until they figure out that you are not a predator but a food provider.

Rams need dither fishes to make them less shy. No experience with apistos.

for the deco of the tank, a tank with lots of hiding space is a ideal tank for dwarf cichlids =) it can be up to you to design . There are many stuff which you can play around with.

hmm thanks. think i'll try putting some driftwood with java moss tied. as for places to hide what can i put? rocks?
oh...another question, which type of gravel is more suitable for rams and apisto ? thanks...

Hi Roy,

I also just finished settin up my apisto tank. 4th phase liao, just re-arranged the mount everest in my tank. Ok enough braggin.

I would suggest u decide between rams or apistos lor. Pure tank of only 1 species is very nice. And from what i learnt from my sifu, he's up there in this thread. HaHa. Rocks and wood don mix well. If u prefer wood tied with java moss, can also make sure have lotsa it. So as to create more hidin place and make them feel secure

What kinda gravel ? Those fine gravel 0.3-0.5cm, lonestar or dennerle would be a good choice.

well its also a qtn of how many fish u r keeping too really. just remember that most cichlids r territorial using deco in tank as landmarks, insufficient draftwood or too many fish will result in stressful, weaker fish.

rams i feel r more aggressive while mixing them is not a big problem just be prepared for accidents.
