recommend a tetra that can school in a 2ft tank in mid level...seems like some tetras are top level...
cardinals seem to swim in a school if they are large in numbers. Had 20 of them but don't seem to school in a 2ft tank. Maybe should buy more but how many more can i keep in a 2ft tank?
Microrasboras 'galaxy' seem to school in mid and bottom level but expensive to buy...

I'd recommend that you don't buy galaxies (now known as Celestichthys margaritatus) for now, as they are currently being overfished in their native habitat, and are not currently farmbred.

IMHO, glowlight tetras are good low to mid level fish. They school quite tightly and don't spend a lot of time at the top (though it's a different story at feeding time... ).

I agree with illumnae that rummy nose tetra is a good choice for schooling fish. They are very majestic looking with their red nose when they are given good water conditions.

rummynoses would hang out in the middle to the bottom of the tank... get a school of about 6 congo tetras they stay mostly close to the surface.. keeps my cardinals and rummies schooling great.

For a 2 footer, most tetras will get pretty big and it might get cramp in time. I have 12 ember tetras and 2 dario dario and it looks cramp for a 2 footer as it is. Rather than looking for a particular species, since most will school, the key idea is to keep your number reasonably to say about 20 or so.

I got 50 neon tetra in 2 ft tank... . Seems managable if you keep up with weekly water changes and feed sparingly.

If you have good water conditions with a dark background, go with a school of rummy nose as suggested by bros above....

they school well together and exibihits bright red heads and patterns of black strips on their tail.....if not, my other suggestion would be rasbora espei or harlequin...

how many tetras would you guys advice to keep in a 1 1/2 ft tank.

hmmm what do you mean by feed sparingly? how much is that to be?
the more fishes you have the lesser you feed them?
how does that work by the way..

oh and one more question does algae flakes work fine with tetras?

    sorry.. just curious.

Feed sparingly means just be extra careful about not overfeeding...they are omnivores, so a diet made purely out of algae flakes might be a bit imbalanced.

If I may add...you might want to check out blackskirt tetras. I have 5 in a 2ft and they school even in such small numbers. Hang out around the midlevels as well, and they are very hardy.

Tetras are very low-waste fish, so they can be kept in unusually large numbers...the only problem is usually space as they need lots of swimming room to thrive and look good.

Uhm, wrong thread? Celestichthys margaritatus (formerly Microrasbora sp. "galaxy") are cyprinids, and not tetras?
