Hi, i'm just curious about this as i've heard from a few fellow forumers that 12mm is very safe (backed up by their tank makers) while another tank maker told me 12mm is only good enough for a bare 422 tank and not a planted 422 tank, and that a planted one would require 15mm glass. anyone know which thickness is 100% safe?

Why are you opting for a braceless tank?

If it is intended to be a planted tank, can consider getting one with euro-bracing or cross braces at the bottom of the tank, these can be easily hidden by your gravel anyway.

I think, at the end of the day, someone (including tank makers) can assure you that this thickness is fine, braceless is fine etc, but they are not the ones who will pay for your losses and help you mop your floor.

euro bracing can't use lily pipes =) if not for this one reason, i'd rather go for a braced tank as well for peace of mind

    Bro

My 4ft planted using 10mm with euro-bracing. You can ask some tankmakers for their point of view, give them your spec and they can judge from there how much thickness you should need for your 4ft.

You also have an account in AF right? Can search for weeyang and ask him too. My tank is done by him.

For local tank makers , 15mm should be safe.
12mm when fill with water , the glass will bow at the center.

    I have braceless 48 x 24 x 30 high. Because of the extra height I opted for 15mm glass.

12mm will do. Euro brace at bottom and reinforced silicone on the 4 sides.

euro brace on the bottom is sufficient to secure the tank? most euro bracings are both top or bottom or top only? my current tank is not very well made so i can't judge from it

Hi my current tank is 4x1.5x2 10mm with euro-brace. For braceless 4x2x2, 12mm is sufficient unless you are going for more than 2ft height.

I have enquired before for 5x2x2 braceless need 15mm and 6x2x2 at least 18mm to be on the safe side but the cost of the tank is...

Full euro brace is top and bottom. In this case, a bottom brace will be enough for a 12mm tank. Re-inforce silicone on the side(with additional glass strip on the 4 side of the tank.

The four strip of glass will be placed around the internal perimeter of the tank. Either top or bottom of tank depending on your specs.

so unlike euro bracing, the strips will be placed lying on the glass instead of perpendicular to it?

The 4 strip is to re-inforce the sides, so to allow more silicone to be used without unsightly thick layer of silicone. For bottom brace, they are using 4 strips of glass around the bottom perimeter of the tank as mention, again to strength the joint with more silicone to be used.
