i'm not a pro, still a newbie and learning as i go along =) i am still very youthful in the hobby compared to others in the forum. i'm just sharing what i found to work with my apistos that's all =)

edit: apistos don't eat until they explode, but it's good to avoid overfeeding anyway as they do eat till they get fat =) apistos like to forage for food on the ground (their gill sifting comes from sifting sand from the ground for food) and so sometimes even if they seem like they're not eating, they are actually getting the food at a separate time.

You have an Iwagumi scape? Keep a lookout of any aggression between the two and see if more hiding spaces can be provided for either of one.

I'm not sure of A.agassizii, but my T.candidi when she wants to breed, she starts to dig out her own caves, destroying my scape as a result. But I believe, she will lay her eggs (if she breed) in some "cave" like overheading rocks or even the very nice diffusor you have there.

i can see the male trying to attack the female in quick spurts and the female will dart away.. the female like very scared? Thought the female should be the more aggressive one?

i made a cave for them at the back..

the female will only be aggressive when defending a brood of eggs/fry, and even so she might take a few batches of fry to learn how to be a good and protective mother. Other than that, it's usually the male who's chasing the female around

mine does the same thing
but he doesn't really keep it up for very long
the female will escape his 'attacks' a couple of times, then either she slips into some area thats out of his line of sight
or he loses interest and picks around the floor or disturbs the dithers

i see.. that would be a beautiful sight..

The female is quite scared now.. hiding at one corner.

I bought tetrabits today, saw the male eating once only, think it does not like it yet.

if you want to know what's interesting, you should see my elizabethae pair. they chase each other around because they can never get "in the mood" at the same time. when the male feels like mating, he'll be chasing the female all around the place...then when the female feels like mating, she'll be flaring at him while he slinks away. they never seem to want to mate at the same time since about a month ago

i really love apistos and their unique characters

Or can i put another breed of female apisto inside my tank, will they breed?

you want to create a trio (1 male 2 females) in your tank? a 1ft tank is too small for a trio...it can barely fit a pair in comfortably. you'll want at the very least a 2ft tank or larger for this

furthermore, take note than with a trio, when the male breeds with one of the females, the other female will have to be removed as soon as possible or she'll get beaten up very badly

Hi marle, nice pair of A. agassiziis there. I'm not sure whether Biotope sell in singles for the so called wild agassizii super red. You can call him to enquire.

Also do take note that the female may turn aggressive during or after breeding. I lost my male A. agassizii 'red-black' in that way.

I feed my Apistos Tetrabits, bbs and daphnia.

amazing. the female is small size in comparison,yet is so aggressive during breeding from what you guys described. I am waiting to see its traits.

Oh forgot to add. I myself try not to feed daphnia too often, don't really trust the water that it comes in. I also rinse the daphnia before feeding it.

The Ap. agassizii "Red Black" seems to have particularly aggressive females in this batch. The one i observed in Biotope that shrimp999 eventually bought bred in Biotope and the female was also attacking the male until his tail was slightly frayed and he had to be removed into another tank...and that was just after the eggs were laid...i think she would have turned even more aggressive after the eggs hatched into fry

my 2 buggers doesn't like tetrabits yet. The male bite abit then it spit it out from its mouth.

The female's back fins looks quite injured.

updates: they still do not like the tetrabits. It was left on the floor and became mouldy.

Male is quite aggressive nowadays

give them some time to get used to the new food...just throw 1-2 pellets in during feeding time, or crush it up and throw it in together with some frozen worms to trick them into eating it

I got my agassizii fries to eat the tetrabits by crushing the pellets and feeding it together with bbs. Now most of the fries are feeding greedily on the tetrabits without me having to crush the pellets.
Also do try to siphon away the leftovers.
