    HELLO[]I'm new to this forum
    I live in POLAND and need sugestions for filtration, for 100G(60x20x20) [375L(150x50x50cm)]planted tank.
    I must make my decision to mondey.
    Should I use two filters or only one.
    My choice is from:
    - one EHEIM 2217,
    - two EHEIM 2215,
    - two EHEIM ECCO 2235,
    Plese do not recomend my EHEIM 2228 or 2028 becose there are to expensive.
    OK. two EHEIM ECCO 2235 cost the same but the second 2235 I'll buy in abouth three month, if I decide to choice them.
    Plese recomend my also choice of filter material for those filters from botom to tope.
    Any reply or sugestions are welcome

    For a planted tank, you only need
    • One 2215, OR
    • Two Ecco 2233
    Eheim has suggestions for Filter Media at their website
    2217 click here
    2233 click here
    Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
    Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
    A woman, without her man, is nothing.
    A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    does one 2217 cost the same as two 2215?

    i will stick to two 2215

    Eccos are not worth the money IMO compared to the solid classic series

    How much does the Ecco cost compared to the 2215 where you stay ?

    when u say the ecco cost the same, what do u mean?

    and also, for the media, for all the 3 filter u mentioned, the water flows thru the media from bottom upwards
    so mechanical media should be below and biological above...basically.
    I dont know what is available to u so thats all i can tell you.

    anyway, u can also check if media is provided when you buy your eheims...it should be.

    Hi[] Isz.
    Here are the prices:
    2217-105$,
    2215-75$,
    2233-70$,
    2235-95$,
    2028-200$.
    All clasic and ecco filters are equiped which 5-6 foam filter pads and one fine filter pad. The profesional model comes which two foam filter pads and one fine filter pad.
    I know that the mechanical media should be below the biological. What I mean was what wood you recomend for filtration (ceramic rings,foam filter pad,fine filter pad,lava roks,bio foam(JBL). And in what combinachan for mechanical and biological from bottom to top.
    In my range are those filter media: eheim (expensiv),SERA(www.sera.de),JBL(www.jbl.de).

    the reason why i prefer the 2215, 2217 series is coz their design are simple, straighforward, highly effective.

    i will definitely get 2215 rather than 2235 if you ask me to choose.
    But thats because i can live without the accesories (priming aid etc etc )

    100gallon planted.....
    i will use a minimum of a single 2217
    provided your fish load is not too heavy.

    1 x 2217 =>$105
    2 x 2215 =>$150
    2X3335 => $190
    1x2217 + 1x2215 => 180$
    2 x 2217 => $210

    it depends on your budget..

    of coz my first choice is 2x2217 (which is a lot better than a single 202

    the 2nd choice is 2217+2215

    if your budget is low, just get a single 2217

    whatever it is, i do not suggest getting any Ecco or the 2028
    Esp when you are on a budget.
    YOu can get much more capacity using other models for the same price.

    abt substrate, here is my standard arrangement
    (1) right at the bottom, Eheim Ehfimech
    (2) above it, a few layers of the original blue foam/sponge provided when you buy the canister
    (3) and right on top, EHeim Ehfisubstrate
    (4) sometimes i use a fine filter pad right at the very top ..but not always

    for (1), it is optional. You can just use the blue foam for mechanical ..no problem
    for (2) , no problem coz given
    for (3) it is the biological part. It is an important part. Ehfisubstrate is abt the best biological media you can find in the market..but expensive. Sera's "spirolex" (or something like that..some ceramic ring thing) cannot compare with Ehfisubstrate in terms of capacity (as provided by both the makers)..and it is expensive too ..so dont bother. Abt JBL, i am not sure abt their biological media . But i know JBL makes quite a bit of Eheim-compatible filter media

    for (4) , optional....

    personally my "philosophy" abt filtration is to rely of efficient design, and also to simplify as much as possible.
    in many instances for myself, i find that less is more

    if you're using them for a planted tank
    i'd suggest you forget about external filters if price is the issue
    2 eheim internal filters will provide all the current you need
    plants will do the rest
    but you'll get mulm (which plants will like)

    2 eheim internals may not cost cheaper than a 2215 or even 2217 which offer a lot more consistency and capacity

    in terms of capacity for price, not worth it

    and if want to have bigger capacity from using internals, need to have big ones, harder to conceal them.

    Planted tanks do not need a lot of capacity if you keep the bio-load manageble and plants healthy. I'm running 2 Eheim 2006, hidden behind plants in my 50 Gallon tank. For a 100 Gallon tank, get 2 of the bigger internal Eheims to provide mechanical filtration and water movement.

    Thanks all for you reply to my question.
    I've made my decision - one EHEIM 2217.
    For filter media I'll use from botom:
    1- SERA BIOPUR
    2- FOAM PAD
    3- SERA BIOPUR FORTE
    4- FINE FILTER PAD
    Maybe in future I'll add some mor filtration but now do not have the money.

    2217 is an excellent choice

    and vinz, the reason why i am being so conservative is because the idea of "planted tank" is different everywhere in the world.cannot apply our definition throughout. although one may have certain perceptions of how planted tanks should look like, it doesnt mean it is always the case.

    so many times i had seen pics of tanks labelled as "planted" with high fish loads and not exactly densely planted...some background plants plus a few simple deco thats all.
    in places in US and certain european countries, the "Amano" thing (just one example) is definitely not as mainstream, not like in asia and of coz where we live.

    planted tanks don't need that much biofiltration
    filters for planted tanks are pretty much for the circulation
    i've had filter failure (fluval 404) that i couldn't replace and the tank just kept going without any noticeable effect

    as for ideals of plant tanks over the world
    it doesn't matter
    every one wants healthy plants
    and if your plants are healthy, you don't need the filtration

    we also consider the same factors that you do
    just because you don't think the same way doesn't mean we're wrong either
    vinz is right about the bioload
    unless you go really overboard, it's gonna be alright
    especially with a 100G tank, the water conditions are going to be very stable

    not saying anyone wrong

    But saying cannot apply idea of "planted" throughout

    had seen a 75 gallon filled with 60 platies and assorted gouramies
    look more orange than green
    but still published as a planted tank

    thats the concern

    and ... 2 internals may not be cheaper than a canister...thats the worry [:]
