My macs are mating right now. Interesting to see the transfer of the eggs.

Need some advices on the followings.
Is it possible to switch on the lights? (Was about to switch on the lights when I notice them in a mating ritual)
Do I still continue to feed them or will the male not eat at the moment?
How long before will they be release as fries?

    Thanks alot.

Inexperience me causes the eggs to be consumed. But anyway witnessing the mating process is already an interesting sight.
    Any pointers to share? Thanks.

bro, it's not really about your experience...

many macrostoma is known to eat their brood that is why many seldom has fries..

I see. Read around and it seems that not only water quality plays a part but also much luck is needed.

I'm in doubt. Will the male who is mouthbrooding still able to eat?

    Hi,
my previous macro had breeded more then 7 times. However, all eggs comsumed during brooding time. Consuming of eggs all happened within 5 days of brooding. Heard that if your macro able to brood longer then 5 days, it shouldn't be a problem for them to hold until "releasing of fries".

There was two times when my male macro was brooding and I tried to feed the female. After about 15mins, I noticed that the male was no longer brooding. I believe that feeding do trigger the male to consume the eggs so that he can eat.

You can refer to this link about how to breed macro: http://uk.geocities.com/mohdnooradnin/bmspawn.htm

Hope you have more luck then I do in breeding them.

Yes it's true. I discreetly fed the female and the next moment not immediately though, the male is no longer mouthbrooding. But it takes about 20 to 30 days before the fries are released. Can the male make it without any food? Thanks for the link. Read it but he didn't mention if he's still feeding the pair when mating or mouthbrooding. So to say, during the whole process, I shouldn't feed them?

    Hi,

during mouth brooding stage, they don't feed. However, I do have encounter with some of my betta, Eg: Raja do eat (very rare) while brooding. I guess he is equipped with some special skills to be able to eat and brood at same time. Haha I fed him AP2 and he just open abit of his mouth on the surface of water letting the AP2 to go into his mouth while brooding.

I guess during brooding, you should take out the female without much disturbance to the male. Thus, don't put them in heavily planted tank. Else you will have problem getting the female out. After that, just leave the male alone. Don't feed him and there not a need to on the light...after that, its up to god and your male macro~

They are at it again. 2nd time mouthbrooding. Still in the process of transferring the eggs. This time round hope that they progress a little more further.

    Hi bentusi,

You have a very smooth and successful spawning. But mine, the male swallowed the eggs on the 3rd day of mouthbrooding which I can't do anything about it.

I believe reading your posting somewhere, your mac is kept in a 2 ft tank. Most keepers usually have bigger tanks to successfully breed mac. Of course there are other factors why the mac eat the eggs.

Yeah in a 2ft tank. Will take note of getting a bigger tank when I have my own pad. Actually, I'm just keeping it without any breeding intentions. But if they do spawn then even better. Next step I will try is to reduce the pH. At the moment hovering around 7.

I have mine in pH of around 4.5.

He did this twice but couldn't keep the throat shut beyond 2 days.
