qn on elatine and gravel algae

hi guys

Thanks for your advise on my earlier qn on why my elatine grow instead high instead of spreading. On your reccomendation, I bought another 36w light for my 2ft, and now, the elatine spreads nicely.

Another qn ... the bottom bit of my elatine seems to rot away regularly, while the top layer thrives. Was advised my Teo's staff to cut the top layer frequently. Do you guys do it, or leave it? It's painful to cut the nice top layers.

Another qn on Algae on gravel. I have those dark greenish hair algae growing on the gravels. My yamatoes din clear them fast enuff. Do you guys leave those things alone, or remove those infected gravels altogether?

the reason y u have to constantly prune the top is becoz the bottom isnt getting enuff light.. therefore it will rot

u sure its dark green and not black? sounds to me its BBA

to me, the algae looks dark gree, hairy stuff.

If its bba, do you clear those infected gravel?

the only algae that is bushy and grows on gravel is BBA.. yes, I will try to siphon them out

There is a dark green one that grows like BBA. I've seen BBA, this is not BBA. The dark green one is hard to get rid off too. Normally I just remove it manually, together with the gravel.

i get this a lot
but they only attack the inanimate things, not the plants
i just siphon them out along with the gravel

I used to be plagues by those algae on the gravel as well and affects my glosso. But now they are all gone. I observe my SAE much on them and I added in a few Malayan prawns in my 2 ft tank. Not sure if it's because of the SAE and prawns or the water has been conditioned, the algae is gone now. I've grown tired of siphoning them out as it disrupt my budding glosso as well. What I did then was simply use a wooden chopstick and push them back into the gravel. Fertilizers for my glosso

how do you plant elatine?
like glosso? stick them deep into gravel, leaving a few leaves?
do they need a nutrient rich substrate?

I don't plant them as deep... as long as they're anchored. I think they take more nutrients from the water then the substrate. Their roots seldom reach the basefert. I've seen Ah-Pek grow them on wood or other objects.
