white loach/ruby shark not suitable for planted aquarium?

Hi,

I just started pumping in C02 to my planted aquarium. it's working well coz i can see my riccia and java ferns bubbling (undergoing photosynthesis)

But i notice that my ruby shark and white loach started skimming the water surface. They were supposed to be bottom dweller fishes so i was surprised that they keep skimming the surface.

Is there anything wrong? I transferred them to another tank and they settled at the bottom normally.

CO2 lvl too high for them? wat abt yr other fishes

What about the pH? CO2 will cause it to drop. Did you buffer the water with KH before pumping in CO2?

the other fishes look fine, especially the neon tetras. Most behave normally though 1,2 out of my ten plus tetras do go nearer to the surface.

Nope, I didn't add in KH. I didn't know I had to. Is that for increasing the water PH?

If you're adding CO2, then you should maintain you KH between 4 to 6 degrees. This is to raise pH and prevent the pH from going to low due to CO2 injection. Look in the Aquatic FAQ, there's a post about raising KH. Click this for more info.

i'm guessing the co2 is starting to overkill
pH changes don't affect neons etc so much
they're soft, acid water fish anyway
can you lower the co2?
