These nice bettas were given to me by a fellow forumer. But i can't tell which is male and female.

Is this first picture a male and the second and third a female?

    hmm, quite difficult to say..
at first glance i would have said you were right, first one male, second and third female, judjing from the overall shape (fatter belly in the last two pics), but generally males will have extended anal and caudal fins, so that would make the second photo a male for me. but im not a specialist in raja (mine are still juveniles so quite difficult to tell).
if you wait a while longer for them to mature you will definitely see more of a difference.

Thanks greenD. These guys are pretty young too. Around 6 to 8cm.

Been surfing around, looking at Betta raja. And it seems that the male will have the presence of bluish scales on the gills cover whereas the female is lacking or minimal. Not sure though.

You are absolutely right Leeruisheng. I think it is a little early to tell from the photos. A couple more months and it should be really easy to tell
