    Co2: 3 bubbles per sec

Substrate: Lapis + some fert in pellet form
    Cooling: DIY Fan

Back ground: Java Ferns + Hairgrass + some lotus leave looking stem plant
Foreground: Bolbitis + Nana + Tenellus + Spikey Moss

In addition to seeking advise on my setup as described above, i found some brown deposits on the leaves on some of my Java ferns and pebbles. can some regulars help me understand what these brown stuff are? i dun know if they are harmful but i would most certainly like to get rid of them. i can rub some of them off with my fingers but the ones on the pic rest within the grains of the leaves.

I suspect those are diatom algae, as they tend to appear in new tanks, though no confirmation about that as yet. i did a partial water change and will be looking for ottos to clear them up in a few days. they make the ferns look dead dull!

Hi all, are there ways to get rid of brown algae without introducing any sucker fishes? so far i have read in the forum about adding otos as a solution to the problem.

Thanks Goondoo, Shadow and Rhino for advise, much appreciated. Just got like 5 otos into the tank. Hope they will survive and alleviate the problem soon.*cross fingers*

The plant is clearly limited from something which puts it in poor health and that is why algae is growing on it. A healthy plant does not have algae issues. Are you in this hobby to kill algae or grow healthy plants? Focus on what grows a plant and you shouldn't have much issue with algae.

I'm here to grow healthy plants and tackle algae issues that come along. Peter, do you think there is any problem with my hardware set-up as posted? The set-up has been 3 weeks now. Any advise?

I'll suggest you get the seachem nitrogen since KNO3 is no longer available as well as KH2PO4 (LushGro) for nutrient dosing. Target at 10ppm for NO3 as per seachem nitrogen dosing instruction and KH2PO4 for 2ppm PO4. Weekly 50% water change and trim off the algae. Make sure you have good current throughout the tank as you need to get the CO2 and nutrients to the plants since they cannot move anywhere. Target 30ppm CO2 with the drop checker method.

    Hi Peter,

Sorry for being a little off topic but is LushGro no longer selling powdered forms of KNO3 and KH2PO4? Sorry but I have been out of the country for almost a year. Thanks.

Only KNO3 is banned in Singapore due to NO3 being a potential risk for making bombs. Mmmmm, why don't the government banned cigarettes completely since it is a health risk? Ahhhhhh.....it is a form of revenue for them whereas KNO3 isn't.

    Thanks Peter.

Hmm... I agree that the policy does sound to be a little lopsided. Oh well, at least there are alternatives. Will have to surf the forums a little more to get up to speed on the latest developments in the hobby in Singapore.

Thanks for the tip Peter. I can see from my fish tank there are less visible brownish algae through changing water, reducing co2 and also adding some otos. around 70% less algae. i think i might have added too much liquid fert in the beginning. now i my plants are green again

    Lighting for my fish tank

    Hi all,

As my tank is recovering from algae, I have a question with regards to lighting. Right now i am using these 2 lamps for my 3 ft fish tank. I want ask if anyone is using the same lamps as i am using now? The wattage is not stated on the lamp or the packaging. I have asked some LFS about it but they don't really know. Is there anyone who know how many watts these lamp are? I hope these 2 lamps are sufficent for my 25 gallon tank.If i am not wrong i need 50 watts lighting?

PS: what kind of aquarium lights do you recommend for a 3 ft fern + tenellus setup?

    Hi Burnz,

Since your tank seems to be pretty high-tech, I believe 2 - 3 watts per gallon is sufficient.

It is possible that the 30 in the sign FL30 means that each of the light tubes are 30Ws. Another rough way to estimate the wattage is to make a trip to a light or hardware shop and to look for similar light tubes. More often than not, tubes of similar length and end electrodes are of the same wattage.

    Good luck.

Bolbitis in tank turning dark green color

    hi,

The condition of the bolbitis in my planted tank has been changing since they were introduced. At first they were light green, then when brown algae hits, they were brown at the edges. Now they remain dark green color, though the edges have recovered.I am wondering what is causing the changes to the plant as observed. They are in the shady part of the set up and the water temp is 25deg on the average.

Anyone has good experience with growing lush green bolbitis? Any advice to share?
