    Heard that black quartz will cut the roots ... not sure if this is true cos I have never used it before.

    i dont think so, maybe will grow but very slow, cause black quartz has no fert right? i use GEX soil also take a long time to spread when it is emmersed.

    how thick is your quartz? HC root is quite short. I would suggest to forget about those quartz, unless you want to grow moss only.
