I realized that after pouring 2 packs of GeX(8Kg) into my 3x1.5x1.5ft, I have about 2inches of substrate depth. I am focusing on crypts and its gonna be a low-tech setup.

Is it necessary to topup another bag of GeX(8Kg), as recommended by the LFS?

Previous setup was a slope, with 2inches at foreground, and 5inches at back, creating a slope effect. But I dun see the need for a slope now.

How come you don't see the need for a slope?

2 inches of substrate is pretty deep for me imho

I think 2 inches should be enough, though i would think a slope would give the setup depth and make it look nicer.

    Just my 2cents.

2 inches was flat throughout. The setup is meant for lowtech, with mainly crypts and ferns. So wondering if 2 inches is enough for crypts to stay rooted.

To induce a slope, I need to use another bag of GeX. Still contemplating.

I think it is depend on the plant, i do not know about crypts requirement, but usually foreground plant like glosso, HC, hairgrass, etc, 2 inches are more than enough.

I personally feel that having a deeper substrate is better as it can help cultivate more nitrifying bacteria to convert nitrite to nitrate, allow for sloping and scaping using driftwoods if you need to stuck into the soil to hold firm and slowing the breakdown of soils like ADA soils into mulm after 2-3 years.

If all you want is higher, you can consider adding a pack or 2 of JBL base fert. Crypts love them anyway.
