hi guys, i have been thinking about this for awhile and am considering getting a eden 501. what do you guys think? will it be too powerful because i prefer to have a better filter in case i upgrade to a 1ft cube.

what about eheim ecco series? which one do you all think is good for my current tank and also suitable for future upgrades because i think they look nice. haha

will be great if you all can state the price too or pm the price and shop. thanks alot.

edit: oh ya, i heard that you can only use eden501 if you place it side by side the tank or same level. is this true? then what about the eheim ecco series?

I'm using a Resun CY-20 (200 litres per hour) for my 1ft cube and am very satisfied with it. Costs about 1/2 the price of an Eden 501. You may want to consider it =)

wow the price is attracting me but i want to ask if you have to place it on the same level as the tank to use it and whats its dimension? lastly, where can i get it and the price? i heard eden501 is around one big blue note right?

    If budget is an issue

Try buying the boyu EF-05 EXTERNAL CANNISTER
    ON $24.
HALF THE PRICE OF EDEN 501

the Resun comes with brackets so you can actually hang it on the side of the tank. it's what i do on my 1ft cube. no problems whatsoever. it also comes with a screw cap to fill the filter with water so that priming is easier. dimensions wise i'm not too sure, it should be about the same size as the eden

i bought my filter at C328, but i think NA carries it too. You're right about the pricing and the Resun is about half the price, perhaps very slightly more than half of the price of the eden.

i just checked the internet and found out that the dimension is 17.5x13x18, which is abit larger than eden. think i will get a eden, hopefully the 300l/hr flowrate wont send my hairgrass flying around. haha

should be just nice for 20x20x20, if to strong then face the output rainbar to the glass.

The problem with small filter is can't get surface skimmer that match the hose size. I wonder if there is surface skimmer for 9/12 hose. The DiY surface skimmer can't really work well because no way of controlling the input priority.

you mean surface skimmer wount work with eden 501? haha but thats not my main concern right now since my tank is too small for a surface skimmer.

The pipe size is different although you can use some hose converter. Another reason is as what you said, normal surface skimmer size too big for small tank.

just went down to NA and bought eden 501. then i found out that the rain bar is too long , want to ask if there is any way of modifiying it or DIY a rainbar?

also, is there a need to change the media inside to improve its efficiency or adding any things?

    Hi bro! Good choice!

I just bought my second Eden 501 from C328. Figure that if one of them were to break down later, it can provide sparse parts for the second unit.. and I can also share the accessories too...

Anyway, the length of the rain bar should not be an issue. Just use a penknife and cut it shorter.. Just try to cut it straight so that the stopper can fit it nicer.

thanks merviso, i didnt know i can just cut the rain bar. haha i read around and saw a media called biohome. is it really much better and i also saw some people said that they place a layer of filter wool above the ceramic rings, what is the purpose of that?

Yup, I cut the intake tube for my first eden since it is a bit too long for my tank's depth.

By the way, do take note not to cut it too short since it will increase the pressure for the water out flow.. anyway, since eden is not too strong in the first place, that should not be a big problem.

I only replaced the orginal ceramic ring with Mr. Aqua's ceramic ring. Please note that Eden tense to chok up easier if you put too much filter media into it. I read from some forum that it should be better to just stick to the original media design since it is design to function best in this way. I do put a sponge filter before the water intake tube to act as a prefilter (mechanical) as well as preventing shrimplets and young fish from sucking into the filter...

pardon me for my ignorance, so the water flow from the ceramic rings compartment then to the sponge then out? and for your sponge filter, will it be ok if i just place a few pieces of wool as mechanical filtration instead?

edit: one more thing, have any of you guys use eden without the rainbar? what are the pros and cons of it?

Hey bro! Dun worry, we are all here to learn from each other.

Actually the best is for you to experiment it yourself and see which way suits you better! Maybe you can try it for a while and if you dun like the effect then take it out the next time when you are cleaning the filter.

Personally, my understanding is as follows:

    1. Dirty water get suck into the filter intake
    2. Ceramic ring break down the flow and cause the dirty stuff to settle down at the base of the canister filter.
    3. Bacteria grown on the sponge will help break down the chemical stuff (biological filtration)
    4. The sponge itself will finally trap down the finer particles and polish the water before the outflow back into the tank.

Other bros may like to correct me because I maybe wrong too.

I have try to add more ceramic ring and also sponge, but it seems to chok faster; especially the wool near the intake which will clog up very fast. That's why I'm now just replacing the ceramic ring with a better quality ones from Mr. Aqua so that it can help to improve on the biological filter portion.

As I'm going to use it for my shrimp tank, the sponge filter on the intake tube is therefore neccessary. However, I'm also thinking that with the sponge filter as the first layer filter, my eden will take a longer time to get clogged. I will be going down to c328 again this evening because auntie told me the stock for those double sponge to one tube kind of sponge filter will be in. This will hopefully prolong the timing for the choking of the sponge filter as well.

Anyway, since the shrimp will be able to find food on the sponge as well, it seem quite logical for me to setup in this manner.

ok i have a small problem now. i set up the filter just now and thinking that without using the rainbar, the water circulation will not be that good, but after installing the rainbar(i saw away length of about 3 holes which is around 5cm?), the flowrate become crazy. i place the rainbar at the back and point it 5degrees upwards. although circulation seems to be good, but is it abit too strong if i can see the small GEX gravel rolling around( only a few mini one though). and all the hairgrass are swaying abit.

i tried keeping a guppy in it but the tank is like a whirlpool, its struggling to swim to net it out and place inside my 3ft. then i thought of an idea and that is using an external CO2 reactor. since the current is so strong, can i use a external reactor( which supposedly will reduce the flowrate) and solve this problem? on the other hand i can have a high level of CO2 dissolving.

you can buy those "clips" to reduce your flowrate..

this is one reason why i suggested the Resun filter. 200li/hour is already quite heavy for a 20 cm cube...let alone 300li/hour =P

i ran 250li/hour on my 25cm cube using a HOB filter and i had to change it to a 100li/hour HOB because my plants/gravel were flying around the tank...i feel 200li/hour with a rainbar would have been perfect

lol illumnae why didnt you tell me that haha nvm. now im hoping that the flowrate will reduce over awhile of using. anyway, actually my gravel arent really moving, except maybe one or two(dark green packet) and the hairgrass is swaying. will this affect their growth?

evolutionz: what are the clips you are refering to? where can i get them? thanks
