    Hello all,

I have been wondering whether Seachem Prime can be used for Planted tanks?

Seachem Prime is a water conditioner that remove chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Normal water conditioners usually only remove chlorine and chloramine.

I have started to use it for about 1 month (2 changes so far).
For my planted and shrimp tank, no problems so far.

I don't see why it can affect planted tanks....

Plants are also taking ammonia, nitrifying bacteria also need supply of ammonia. I assume you only add Seachem Prime during water change, so I think it should be ok

Add seachem prime on every water change. Prime removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia and converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. It may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. It can detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat and is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime will not overactivate skimmers.

Thanks very much for all the replies.

I have been using Nutrafin Aqua Plus for years now, but I was not sure whether Prime's Ammonia-removing properties would affect the NPK balance of planted tanks.

Now i can rest assured that using Prime is alright.

I switched from nutrafin to prime as well for 4 months alreadly. No problem. However, note not to overdose by more than 3 times as its very concentrated.

How do you use it during cycling? Periodically put a certain number of drops, or you test the levels of nitrite and nitrates and add prime in accordingly?

Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 200 L (50 gallons*) of new water. For smaller doses, please note each cap thread is approx. 1 mL. This removes approximately 0.8 mg/L ammonia, 1.2 mg/L chloramine, or 3.3 mg/L chlorine. May be added to aquarium directly, but better if added to new water first. If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume. Sulfur odor is normal. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely. To detoxify nitrite in an emergency, up to 5 times normal dose may be used. If temperature is > 30 °C and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose

For a ten litres tank, just a few drops of PRIME would do. it can also be used should you have ammonia or nitrate spike during the week before your regular WC.

For planted tanks you may want to try the rest of the sechem series, namely flourish/excel/potassium and also stability should you intend to keep fish soon as it jumps start the biological cycle in less than 7 weeks.
