filtering rate for planted aquaria?

Hi folks,

what is the ideal filtering rate for a planted aquaria?

I intend to get an external canister filter and wondering what filtering rate is best.

Say for example if my tank's volume is 100 litres, is it too much to get a filter with 600 litres/hour rate
(ie. the entire water volume of my tank is cycled 6 times thru the filter in an hour)

there is no such thing as overfiltering.

There is such a thing as &quot;excessive or overly strong filtering rate&quot;

I once tried out an cheap overhead filter that was so powerful that my small fishes have to swim against the currents created by the suction.

Overnight, my six neon tetras were exhausted and I found them stuck to death at the inlet the next morning.

Since I'm now growing a planted aquaria with more neon tetras, I don't want my riccias, xmas moss and fishes to be moved towards the fiter (or into it LOL)

anyone has similar experiences?

Filter media capacity is more important, IMO.

Personally, I'll go for about 3 times the tank capacity per hour.

i read one website it says optimal is 5 time the tank cap ( to remove fish waste asap ) another thing to consider is use some devices to disrupt the outlet of the filtered water so that there is little current generated by the output

It may be true for fish only tank....

For planted tanks a good circultion is good but strong current/turbulence is not recomended.

there's a difference between over filtering and over circulating.

ie: if you can somehow control the output water current (ie: using a sump or some other method,) it wouldn't matter how many times you overfilter (ie: rate at which water pass through filter media )

where can i buy sumps and how do i install them?

other methods: eg: making the output go through a uv filter, fluidized bed filter, sulphur denitrator, external co2 reactor etc, until the output flow is slowed down and pointing the output towards the tank wall.. etc etc.
