strange white fungus growth due to GEX soil?

    hi guys,

i notice something about my 2 tanks using GEX soil. for the mini 10x10x10, there are some white fluffy stuff growing on the edge of the anubias leaves and corners of the tank and its pretty hard to remove them unless use finger or something to manually scrape it off. same thing for the previous setup using HC, but i thought that was because i did not on lights for 3days. since both setup have this problem, the reason could be lack of current.

but for my 20x20x20 cube tank with eden501 and CO2 injection( although inconsistent these few days due to problems with setup), i notice some of the fluffy stuff growing too on the bottom front part of the tank and growing on some brown parts of the hairgrass, mainly the tips. im pretty sure there is a strong enough current as the rainbar is at the back facing the front, so the flow when seen from the right side is in an anti-clockwise direction.i can even see every hairgrass in the tank swaying. also, i see it growing on the corners, like the part where the silicon is.

for my 3ft tank which is using a jebo 1200L/hr external filter and 1ft shrimp tank using a small hang-on filter , i dont have such problem. for the 3ft, i use base fert and lapis sand. for the 1ft, i use plain white sand which can be bought cheap for a rather big bag.

so im thinking, could this be due to the GEX soil? will hope to get feedbacks from other GEX soil users

p/s: sorry this thread may be in wrong section but i also dunno should be in which section

i have 2 tanks (a 4x2x2 ft and a 25cm cube nano) using Gex soil and i don't experience this problem, so you probably have another source causing it =)

hmm thats strange. could it be my batch of soil? or is it due to slow growing plants? for my mini tank, the only plants are taiwan moss and anubias. for my 20cmx20x20 tank, the only plant is hairgrass. also, they seems to be attached to the tank wall, really an eyesore. ok let me observe for a few days and see how it goes.

it could be hair algae that invaded due to the lack of plant mass?

My guess is that it is just some bacteria, which is quite harmless..

I'm have just set up two 1.5x1.5x1 ft tank. One with ADA Amazonia I soil and one with fine river gravel. I'm also seeing a bit of slimy stuff for my ADA soil tank but it is gone after 2 days. As for my river gravel tank, at first it is fine; however, after I dose some excel and liquid fert for my plants, I start to see a lot of white spider-web thread like stuff all over the tank. I just proceed to throw in my endlers and all these stuff were clear in 2 hrs time.

So, i believe you don't have to worry too much.. but of course, the proper thing is for you to take picture of the "white fluffy stuff" and post it here so that we can have a more accurate identification..

Who knows, it might be snowing in your tank... Merry Christmas!

it couldnt be algae, its white in colour just like spiderweb and its attaching itself to the edge of the leaves of the anubias, so if i were to shake the small tank, i can see those fungus like thing swaying abit like jellyfish like that. for the 20cm cube tank, they are mainly growing on brown part of hairgrass, rotting part i guess. but they also attach to the rocks and i just scrape some off just now and suck them out. i also guess that its some bacteria. will take a pic later and post it

I have this white fluffy spiderweb thingy in my nano tank with GEX as well. Did a search on other forums and the web and some say its an algae called rhizoclonium.

What I did was change water every 2 days, lower my light intensity and overdose on excel for 3 straight days. Its gone now.

I dunno what those scum film things are, but shrimps eat it. Place a few shrimps inside and it would be gone easily.

Looks like fungus to me. I had a similar outbreak during the incipient phase of one of my set-ups. What I did was to drop in a little hungry platy and soon the fungus was wiped out leaving a pretty fat platy.

I got those white things when theres too much uneaten food in the water. Don't know much about SAE.
