Vican, do the Chan way and put a plastic strip in front of the vals. Stops the runners cold and creates a denser wall of vals...

I think just a thin acrylic sheet that is tall enough to come slightly out of the gravel should work to stop the runners.

actually, make sure the sheet is high enuff to block their runners from getting over too
