Heemeng in Arofanatics is the same person we have known in AR.
Nowadays he's not participating much in any forums...

out of curiosity, can you landscape the tank or maintain plants with the aro still in it? will it attack your hand or something?

i think it will simple scare the aro, same goes to discus and altums.. when they see yr hand, they panick.. which in some cases will result in injuring the fish or sometimes they simple jump out of yr tank from the shock.. so the maintenance here, need to have extra care, always put yr hands in infront or them... if their back is facing u, all they will see is a shadow and make a dash

any way to condition them to be comfortable with your hand inside?

I think you have to start with a young arowana.

You have to give it some tall dense plants to hide behind. I started fine, but made the mistake of trimming away too much after the second week of his intro. He was jumpy for a few days, till he figured out he could just as well hide in the lower plants. So got to make sure the tank is well grown out before putting in the aro.

Simon is right, you have to deliberately not spook them initially... avoid sudden movements, etc. They've pretty sharp eyes... mine sometimes get spooked by as much as the movement of my eye. After a while they get used to you, but they can still get spooked.

Mine is more or less okay with me fiddling in the tank already. Sometimes he will come out to investigate when I'm trimming. He will even come out when I'm scooping up floating leaves with a small net.

I think as they get bigger, their size gives them more confidence. Plus they will be more used to the household routine and ppl.

From what I've read, I gather they have personalities, so I guess that could make a big difference.

    can someone get him back
    ----------------

Heheh...I tried. But he has a new job, 2yr old son and another son on the way....so, he's pretty tied up. Recently he's into guppy breeding though

My aro is quite OK with me doing things in the tank. Because of my tank cover, I have to do each side of the tank separately. So when I'm doing something in 1 side, he'll swim to the other side and watch me from there.

There's this guy in arofanatics that plays with his aro everyday, hold its body etc. But they all have different personalities, so it's hard to give a sweeping statement.

My aro has his own territory under some lilies. He goes there sometimes when the lights are on. But when the lights are off, he is swimming all around. Guess they're nocturnal after all.

I have heard of this case when an aro owner did things in the tank before he fed the aro and it attacked his hand. It was a larger aro, probably 1-2 yrs old. So the lesson is, don't stick your hand in when the fish is hungry and larger than your hands...

Yeah, mine swims about more at night too. Part of the day, he takes cover under the Hygrophila.

It's a typical planted tank, i.e. CO2, fert, etc. Of course there's a preference to low maintainance plants and less tall plants (to maximise the top swimming space). N hugry plants will love a dragon tank.
