my zebra oto is alot more active now and i see him foraging for food alot. he ignores freshly thrown in hikari wafers, foraging around and around it for about an hour, but now he's happily sucking on the wafer! so glad i finally see him eating something...was so worried that he'd starve to death!

otos don't need particularly good filtration right? i'm wondering if i should replace the Atman 100li/hour HOB with a Resun 200li/hour canister

I think this would be preferred, but not absolutely necessary. IMHO, good amount of dissolved oxygen is more important (i.e. well growing plants, some water surface movement to promote gas exchange).

my plants are growing quite well, seeing a few cm of growth per week in my HM and R. wallichi with 1/3 EI dosing (based on Tom Barr's low tech guide) and 2-3 times a week excel dosing. water surface movement is currently created by the HOB filter at its outlet, and i think it is more movement than a canister would produce for me as i would be using the rainbar underwater and pointed towards the glass to reduce flow.

my zebra oto loves to eat Hikari algae wafers and New Life Spectrum Cichlid formula Glad to report that it's alive and well and active, and i think it's past the "danger period" of acclimitizing fish...yay!

Wow that's good! Mine died 1wk plus after i bought it. When i brought it home it was quite skinny but after a few days it became very fat from the constant feeding of algae on the leaves and the tank's glass panel. Wonder why it died cause i acclaimatised it slowly into the tank and it was also feeding very well when it suddenly die for no reason.

Anybody experience sudden death sindrum for their zebra otos?

i brought 2 home and one died less than 24 hours later despite proper acclimitization. the one i have now is the survivor from the same batch. i guess sometimes it's just that you unluckily scooped an over-stressed or unhealthy fish from the tank.

Im dosing a lot of dry ferts daily, 50% water change weekly and 24/7 4 bps of CO2.

My water temp is 26~27degC, 2 x 150HQI and loads of flourishing plants.

Fauna are 25 green neon, 3 cardinal, 8 yamato, 2 panda cory, 2 sae, 3 oto, 2 nerite snail and 3 cherry shrimp. I used to have 100 unknown shrimps and 20 tigers, but all decimated over a period of 3 months. I have no clue on this.

Anyway, do you guys think these little fellows will do well in my tank?

Quixotic mentioned earlier in the thread that they don't require special care as compared to normal otos, so if your normal otos are fine these guys should be ok too. in my limited experience with them, it seems that they are like normal otos in the aspect that fatalities, if any, occur during the first week of introduction (probably due to weak specimens). if they survive beyond the first week, they'll be fine.

i bought 2 pieces and 1 died 24 hours after introduction to the tank. the other one has been alive for over a month and is active and eating well with no special treatment as compared to my normal otos in my other tanks

Do keep us posted if there are any zebra oto sightings in C328. Think mine is pregnant, so i wanted to get her a mate.

just as an addon, i find that my new zebra otos, unlike their predecessor, don't like hikari algae wafers. the old one used to rush for the wafer, these just ignore it. what they DO like, is crushed snails. i saw both of my new ones sucking away at the shell of the ramshorn snails i crushed from the side of my tank. carnivores!

Ok here's reviving an old thread with a new question - how well do zebra otos travel once established?

I've got a number of happily swimming zebra otos in my office tank, and I'm thinking of transferring them back to my home tank due to their inavailability at present and also because they look too similar to the L333 i'm intending to put in this tank (boring if everything's black and white!)

so while i think i'm having pretty good results keeping them alive, are they any more delicate than normal otos when travelling?

In your case, they should have no problems if you transfer them to your home tanks since you've kept them in your present trank for quite some time and they are also healthy.

But there are things to take note to ensure they survive when tranported to your home tanks,
    1. Never ever blow "air" from your mouth into the plastic bag of fishes - not even abit to make it look "full". They are CO2 from your lungs.
    2. The atmospheric air that you'll use to pack your fishes won't contain enough oxygen, so make sure you get them back to your home tanks ASAP.
    3. Do the usual conditioning from plastic bag to tank

haha yeah i transfer my fish from office to home and from home to office alot so that's no issue, was just wondering if they were particularly sensitive to travelling. I use plastic microwaveably containers to transport my fish, not plastic bags. hence, i can "top up" air anytime i have a resting spot by opening the cover and resealing after awhile
