they call it siesta, basically 4 hrs on, 1hr off, another 4 hrs on.

The idea is plants photosynteshis can respons to light faster than algae, in order word algae need long uninteruptable light to function properly.

I never try it, so do not know how effective it is.

Algae respond faster than plants and not the other way around. Having that much light is like driving at very high speed. A heavy crash would happen if the plants requirements are not met which will always happen due to neglect.

I guess my book is wrong then. According to the book Encyclopedia of Aquarium plants by Peter Hiscock, page 59 "algae are not biologically advance as plants and need long and relatively uninterupted period of light to function properly"

Once again I never try this method, never have algae issue except for those green spot.

    Guys

In my opinion, i feel that if your plant is strong, algae will not grow. Just observed Amano's setup. It is a control of all variable.

For instance when they setup: -

    1) Cube garden S: 31cm x 18cm x 22cm
Total volume = 12 litres or 2.7 gallon
For this tank, they recommend Solar mini s which is 27W. Therefore 27/3 = 9W/ gallon

    2) For 45cm and 60cm cube garden, they are using 72W of PL light in their Solor I lighting set.

Therefore I strongly believe 3W/ gallon is more associated with larger tanks.

As for HC, as long it wont die, it will spread like mad after 2 - 3 months. Just dont disturb it.
