Hey guys, just wondering about the suitability of a trio of celebes rainbowfish Telmatherina ladigesi as dither fish for my cacas?

They're presently housed in a one foot cube, moderately heavily planted with java fern, java moss, vallisneria, crinum and anubias nana.

If you just want to dissipate aggression, any fishes smaller then them can be used as dithers. I have used cardinals, different species of rasboras, endlers, nanostromus and even hatchet fishes.

However, i would strongly suggest that dithers be removed once you have free swimming fries. Or else, survival rate of your fries will be low. Also, i removed the male once the female spawns.

i think i'll take the rainbowfish out once the female lays eggs (if she does, that is ).

Just to note that the scientific name Telmatherina ladigesi is now considered as the synonym. Marosatherina ladigesi is the name being used for Celebes rainbowfish now.

I'll just give dither fish a miss. Just remove the male after the spawn. Nothing will happen.
Dithers are usually more for us to see but beware of apisto's aggression. I've seen apisto whacking pencil fish and had a few left lying around the next day. It's not commonly seen but it happens.

I still see no co-relation with apisto & dither fish. Do they really help?
    Cheers!

Ah, i see.. thanks for the info

Benetay: yes, actually i do not see the need for dither fishes, not in the case of my caca pair at least.. they both seem sufficiently bold, and the male does not seem overly aggressive toward the female. I had intended to add dithers in as i was afraid that the male might exhibit high levels of aggression directed at the female. A tank rescape i did prior to introducing the female helped dampen his aggression, i think
