I used to do that 1 hour after lights off and then till 1 hour before CO2 is on.
There are arguments that this will cause fluctuation in the pH.
This is the same as lifting up the lilypipe at night in ADA setups.

Lifting of ADA Lilypipes? I dont understand how this can be done?
is it lifting up the lilypipes to slightly above the surface to create a waterfall effect to promote dissolve oxygen am i right?![]()
I used to add an airpump when lights off but I don't see any effects unless I inject too much CO2...
Slightly off topic here:
On Sunday, I did a 40% water change for my 6 months never-change-water tank, after topping up water and adding anti chlorine, I saw 4 of my upside down catfishes floating around, stunned.
I quickly scooped them out and put them into a bucket and ran an airstone at full power, after about 20-30 minutes, they recovered.
Lesson learnt:
1. Don't do large percentage water change if it is not your common practice.
2. The 'healing power' and benefits of well oxygenated water is amazing.

There shouldn't be a need unless you see the fish hanging around near the surface when the lights/co2 are off.
