The male will be whacked by the female if they're together. If not, the male will eat the youngs.

Zack
Planted tank: Melanotaenia Lacustris, Melanotaenia Parkinsoni, Melanotaenia Praecox, Glossolepis Incisus, Melanotaenia Maccullochi, Melanotaenia Boesemani, Iriatherina Werneri, Barilius Canarensis
not all male will eat the young...
at biotope... thio did not remove the male at all... and fries grew up....
you can go down to biotope to have a look![]()
Woah....
Yours breed so fast?
Is it because your tank is densely planted?
My Caca still no news yet......
Anyway, if the fries are large enough, sell me one male can? lol
yup it's true that not all males will eat the young. but it's usually better safe than sorry so most people will remove the male if they intend to raise the batch of fryi'm not too sure about this as it was a few months back, but i think i read somewhere that for a particular pair, the male actually helped look after the young
yep what the male will chew up the food into small pieces for the fries...
male will only eat up young, when there is other fishes around, and he felt threaten.
you mean me?.
my tank is not very dense planted..
but tank is in aircon room
i think im just plain lucky that they breed fast
sell you one male. yep no problem

yep its better to play it safe...
but if my Apistogramma cacatuoides or viejita breed again. and if tank is big enough, i will try leaving the male in....
my experiences with leaving the male in have always been bad =( especially the bitaeniata which is particularly aggressive...usually the eggs don't even last 24 hours
qhmmm do you have other fishes inside beside the pair?
if so maybe the male is being stress up?

Have previously bred agas and borelli in their respective 1 ft tanks. If i remembered correctly i had 2-3 spawns each. I never removed the males and they have never really posed a problem. In fact, the male keeps a distance from the female (and the fry) and protects the whole area. I believe at that time people usually remove the male after spawning so as to allow it to breed with another pair.
Oh and congrats =) prepare yourself... have to be part time fish nanny before you know it =)
hmmmm what you say really encourage me to try it out next time round!
I'm feeding them with bbs now. So male is to protect the surrounding if there are other fishes in it. Nevermind, this round i remove the male and see. Next round then i leave the male inside.
Must wait for how many days then i can put my male back?
