was at c328 doing my shopping, since uncle told me that there are 2 pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides in today.

rush down from work and reach around 7.45pm, immediately look at both the pair.

there is one guy about 40 year old standing beside me carrying 2 bag full of fishes, looking at a small tank full of tetra and looking at fighting fish too.

ok back to Apistogramma cacatuoides. 1 of the pair is Apistogramma cacatuoides orange, fins and tail totally orange without black spot at all. female look good too.

i stand there and look for 15 minutes. look and look. and the guys was still beside me. looking at me eyeing on the fish.

out of sudden, he ask uncle to packet all the tetra, and the Apistogramma cacatuoides orange that im looking at!

i thought tough luck, i was thinking whether should buy or not, and im too late.

when uncle was bagging the fish, he said "I ONLY WANT THE MALE ONE, SELL IN A PAIR MEH? CAN PUT IN 2.5FT TANK WITH ALL THE FISH? WILL THEY FIGHT OTHER FISH"

when i heard i thought of saving the female fish so i offer to buy the female fish if he dont want, he told me its ok, he will take.

he told me he totally dont know what fish was them, say his tank very empty so buy and PLAY PLAY.

i heard liao WANT TO CRY!

i told them most of use keep them as a pair in a tank of their own and breed them.

he just laugh and walk off.

i really want to bang my head, as such a nice pair end up like that.

hai if im faster abit, they will be swimming in my breeding tank, design specially for them rather then a 2.5ft cramp with fishes!. (he was carrying at least 40 fishes lor!!!!)

i dont mind if this pair was bought by another Apistogramma lover, but bought by someone that totally dont want what he is buying...... and cramp all fishes together....hai

    i guess thats life...

    sorry for this long story....

Thats why when you see something nice, buy them before someone else does it. (Not being kiasu)

I'm sure he bought it on impulse & he might eventually find his way into AQ who knows?

There ain't many apisto in the market, if you see something nice, buy them. Think so long, people will grab it.

    Nice things don't come easily

That orange flash caca was there for quite awhile. Don't worry since it's a breed specimen i'm sure there will be many more to come. Unless if it's wild than it's another story.

    Cheers!

haha i fully agree with this! the apisto market is heating up lately with alot of people joining the hobby. if you delay even awhile, the good fish will get snapped up! in the past, when c328 brought in good fish, they would sit in the betta tanks sometimes for weeks even (i think the A. agassizii "Tefe" that someone on the forum bought was spotted as being a good buy for 2-3 weeks before it was bought) but now a large shipment doesn't even last a few days.

for my elizabethae pair, i rushed down to Biotope the moment it opened the day after the shipment arrived, and just barely managed to get the choice pick of the 3 pairs that came in - and this was before the craze went into full swing.

next time you see a pair that you like and is within your budget, don't hesitate, just buy =) good thing for you, as benetay mentioned, is that A. cacatuoides "Orange Flash" comes in very often at C328 and the quality of these fish is quite constant.

ha i get what you all mean. just that i feel bad for such a nice fish being bought by someone totally have no idea what they were buying.

by the way, talking about A. agassizii "Tefe". saw one in c328 without the female. the female kill by it by jumping over to the male tank.

the A. agassizii "Tefe" was dying as the air tube was out of place...

so i insert the airtube back, and i go for dinner.

i go back and see it after my dinner, it was happily swimming! ha

quite a nice piece "but i didnt buy "

This story is not as bad as the period immediately after the movie "Nemo" for all the clown fishes. I was at one of these farm lfs in Pasir Ris. A little girl asked to buy a Nemo and the indulgent mother who may or may not know that it requires sea/salt water obligingly bought one. I debated whether to point it out to her but as one of the shop people was nearby, decided not to (did not want to take away their business).

I feared Nemo went into a small tank filled with tap water and probably suffered water changes. It was probably one of many.

Shop owners often don't provide info. Sometimes it is because they do not have time to advise but I suspect it is because if your fishes died, you will come back to buy more. Their business after all is to sell fish, not to teach. How many newbies were told about cycling when they bought their tanks or about bioload when they bought the 100 neon tetras at Seaview with the 2 ft. tank.

But in a way, non-experts keep prices down. If only experts or enthusiasts bought fishes, they would be darn expensive.

yep got to agree that the show nemo bought alot of clown fish to their grave. and i get work out when me and my friend saw a clown fish, and they will shout nemo, some of them thought that nemo is the name of the fish!.

however on another hand, the movie nemo did bought alot of good attention to the marine world, parents can use it as a teaching to kids.

about the fish shop owner, hai they got to have a balance.

    its a never ending story.

Wah what a waste.. this is the type of person that just throw money into the fishes and don't know what they are and how to take care of them.

Agreed with Benetay. Nice things don't come easily.. If you saw what you want and within your budget then grab it don't wait before someone grab it.

Actually Sometimes I believe more in fates in acquiring fishes.. If it is yours.. it will be yours.. Even if you rush down to get the fish you like very much.. and say fate does not permit you and the fish to be together.. It somehow will die unknowingly the next few days.. I personally have that kind of experiences in the past before..

This guy may not know what fish it is initially.. But he may just love the fish after that night once he releases the fish into the tank and like what Bro Benetay said.. he might just find his way to AQ soon..

2.5FT tank for the pair of apisto sounds more than reasonable....even with tankmates of 40-50 tetras, I feel that it is still spacious enough. There are folks in Singapore who keep apisto pair in 1 feet tank and still capable of breeding them.

Although I do empathize with you and now that I have successfully bred apistos, I understand your concerns. But aren't impulsive buying pretty normal as well? I started my apistogramma hobby like that as well, ordering 5 pairs from HK and then giving the females away. I am not saying I am right but sometimes it happens to people that like the fish but do not know much about it. Do you think that 40 year old man should have gone and read up about apistogrammas? maybe he should but I am sure he could not because

    1. That apisto pair would hav been bought
    2. How to start searching for something one does not know?

A lot of us are probably guilty of buying fishes and not aware of their habitats, breeding and feeding habits. But that's how some of us would have started the hobby anyway.

i guess as much, when i first started keeping fishes, at 16... i kill at least 20 fishes! then i go read up.....hai

but on other hand there were tons of people that will keep buying... and killing all those fish..... money to them is nothing.....

the worst is they bought those rare fishes.... example rare marine wild caught fish.... then keep it and die... then buy again.....

    winner lah!

you can think of it another way...
because of people like him, the LFS can survive.
impluse buy, cannot provide good husbandry, fish die, buy more fish...
sad when you love the fish but helps the LFS economically.

Well I must admit I didn't read up much on apistos when I just started. I provided them with less than ideal conditions and in the end I killed some of them.

Its a learning process, and now I realise I should have everything set up before I plunge in.
