Hi ronig, for 2ft and without corals, I think a canister filter like eheim 2213 and protein skimmer shld be enough. Even with the best filer system if u overcrowd your tank it will still not be the best.So bear in mind the amt of livestock u r keeping later. Myself I prefer NNR method - Natural Nitrate Reduction, using a sump, liverock, livesand and protein skimmer but my 2ft is a 2x2x1.5 so can accomadate the overflow box with the sump which is also a 2 footer.

I agree too. I guess for a two feet tank a overflow with sump is the best option. It increases water volume so that you can keep slightly more fish in . You can have ultra deep sand bed in the sump, reaping its benefits but yet you wun see it. Skimmer in 2ft tank?.. no way man.. its way too ugly .. so put it in the sump~! furthermore can save the hundred plus canister filter.. just section up ya sump to have the water pass over wool, sponge, carbon and bioballs.... In addition the water that you pump back into the main tank can act as another power head to stir current in the tank. So i think that having a sump wouold be great~!

Agree with the above posts. A good sized Eheim cannister will work well...your main source of filtration (well, biological) is from your Live Rock in a marine environment..

3" of DSB min + a power head for water circulation + LR is the only thing you need..... using canister, UGF, overhead, sump or other filtration method without LR and/or DSB will caused high nitrate in long run. This is my suggestion...

    1) get around 0.5 kg of LR per every gallon of water you add.
    2) 3" of DSB is a min...
    3) a powerhead rating 8~15 times of your water volume for water circulation.

    I disagree..
I dont think a deep sand bed (DSB) is needed to run a sucesfull tank. i dont even think live sand is needed. However, i do think that live rock should be added. That is the backbone of the marine system.

    Hi Mez,

its interesting to hear that you disagree on the need of a DSB. Could you share with us the water parameters of your marine tank? Maybe you could divlge your secrets of successful reef keeping at keeping NO3 under control.

    Please share, thanks in advance!

    Hi setiardi,

the tank size and the sump idea of your set up is what I am planning to have. Can enlighten me where you get them and how much it should cost me? I am not a DIY person, unless you are saying putting in the filter medium can lah...[] anything like constructing the sump is a no no for me

    Well Mez,

I'm afraid like Tigershark, I too think a DSB is essential, but, to each his own. Just that when I had my light-load 240G SPS tank in the past, I used 150kg of LR, and it could help lower my NO3 to 40 ppm, year-in, year out, even after 4 years.

In my current 300G with 180kg LR, and just a 3" DSB, with also a light-fish-load, and lots of corals, the NO3 dropped to 0 after just 4 months, and has stayed there even after a year, even during heavy feeding sessions, or when my elephant ear spits out half an uneaten tang into the LR where I can't remove it.

So, I'd also say a DSB is a lot safer bet than without. Of course, LR is also essential at the same time

    hi guys im back

i think tt the real natural succussful way to reduce no3 is by hving a refugium or dsb. or maybe u can use a denitrator

as wat the rest said, try to get a sump so tt u can hv both a refugium wif dsb, olso u save valuable space. i seriously dun think a canister-only method will be able to do the job for marine tanks.protein skimmer is olso gd to hv although there r claims tt there isnt a need when using a refugium.

if u decide to go wif dsb, the min depth is 4in. i tried 3in but not alot of success

with a 2ft, go for a ac fan.. it should cool your tank substantially... well, u have not mention what u want to get.. so, a bit hard to tell u where to get it.. anyway.. all the best to your setup.. any problems that u have, raise it inside this forum.. and take note of the nitrogen cycle and be very very very very very very patience.. that is the name to having a successful setup
