I just come across to this website and straight away register with it. It is a great site with lot of information on keeping fish and aquatic plant.

Well i found it at the right time because i'm planning to setup my second 3ft tank this weekend plants and fish from tetra family. Since this is my first time setting up a planted tank, i want to start with Java Fern and Java moss as recommended in many website. Since i'm in a low budget i won't be using any pressurize CO2 tank at the moment.

For lighting, I'm planning to purchase double tube fluorescent with a ratting 25 watts each (total 50 watts specially design for aquatic plants by nirox) since i can't find any 2ft fluorescent tube with higher watts ratting at my local aquarium store. Is this the best idea or should i use normal Fluorescent tube (daylight) which is having 38 watts per tube?

Is anyone have experience planting using a pot? Or I should straight away use fertilizer substrate at the bottom of the tank? How long i can use it until it replenishes all of its nutrient? I'm thinking of using a pot for easy re-scape and gravel cleaning.

    Thanks,

    Regards,
    Nysher

Greetings Nysher, first off, welcome to AQ.

which part of Malaysia are you from? I can't remember the maximum wattage for fluorescent in 2ft, but since this is your first tank and you going with low light plants. 50 watts should be sufficient.

since this is a introduction section, do post your other questions in their respective sub forum.

    Hi Simon!

I'm from Penang, northen region of Malaysia. Actually this is my Second Aquarium Tank, but to be first Planted Aquarium.

When I first setup my first tank about a year ago, I do start planting, but I made a mistake. I put 4 small Silver Dollar Fish together with some other fish such as Tiger Barb etc. Within a few week all my plants gone. So i can't count it to be my first planted tank. That time I was so naive about aquarium and fish behavior. Later I found out Silver Dollar Fish love to eat plants. Now all of the Silver Dollar Fish are grown bigger to a size of about 3 inch.

I like to have planted tank, and that is the reason I'm setting up the second tank.

Sure I will post both of my tank once I set it up nicely.

    Thanks,

    Regards,
    Nysher
