    Dear friends,

Currently i have a 4 feet moss tank, no chiller, no co2, basically low tech moss/fern tank.

Am planning to add shrimps but since i am new to shrimps, i would like to go easy and slow. Which shrimps should i start with?

And can someone pm the rough price of buying 100 cherry shrimps and where i can get in bulk?

And also some of my malayan shrimps are of different colours, why?

    many thanks and God bless

Hi there.. Welcome to the shrimp keeping community!

Cherry shrimps can be fairly easily gotten from other forumers in the buy/sell market place in AQ.. prices are fairly cheap..

You can just go there to browse, and you can easily find many sellers selling cherries..

AQ user: "Cherries Lover" is a good bet to get such large quantities of cherry shrimps from, though I didn't personally purchase any from him before..hope this helps..

Oh yea, regarding the malayan, they are able to "change" colour based on the environment.. Mine ranges from grey to green to "brown with light brown stripe on back"..

hi , why you don't start a more colourful breed of sakura shrimp, was told that is as easy as cherry, and the colour more intensive than cherry.

    many thanks derk

choo: more of a cost price decision, wanted the shrimps to be visible in a 4X2X2, i doubt even with a 100 cherries, i would be able to see them, so i were to buy sakura .... but i maybe wrong as i am not sure of the market price of shrimps.

in terms of algae eating, malayan better or cherries?

and how many should i get fot 4X2X2

    thanks and God bless

i've got over 50 cherry(both adults and shrimplets) and 18 crs in my 40cm tank.. Usually can only easily see 10+ of them in the open.. So for your 4feet tank, i definately don't think 100 is too little..

And i don't think shrimps will eat moss, they eat micro algae that grows on it..

Btw, from LFS, generally malayan are about 5 times cheaper than cherry, but i feel cherry shrimps are nicer to look at..

hmmm ok will give it a shot

i have heard of cherries and malayan cross breeding, though it maybe a no-no to those who are interested to keep them as pure breed, i am just interested to know if it is true that they do cross and usually what is the F1 like?

apologies for so many questions, any gurus?

    God bless

    Hi Samhon,

I read from petshrimp.com that malaya shrimp is not known to interbreed with other shrimps.

Actually, I would advise you to go for Sakura Cherry if possible, since care and effort is the same for both. You do not need to get 100 shrimps as a start. Just get 10 or 20 in your tank and it will soon breed like a rabbit.

By the time your tank is filled with a few hundred of the normal cherry shrimps, it will then be too late to regret.

Warmest Regards from Merviso aka Merv Soh

Tiger shrimp are cute i like their stripes more than the red of cherries. but they're fussier than cherries in terms of water quality demands

    Hi,

For beginner, suggest to start with the simplest and cheapest shrimp, i.e. malayan shrimp. Last time, I also started with malayan, follow by cherry and then tiger, bee and now I'm breeding CRS... Breeding malayan and cherry helps me reatly to gain experience and apply on CRS...
