hi..i need some advice on my calvus ..i found out dat my calvus mouth can't close !!!! wat happen 2 him ??? is he suffering from anything ???

Look at it head-on , does his face look 'bent' ? Its almost likely its a case of broken jaw. Probably bumped it too hard against some decor or a tank side when frightened or chased.

Not all survive this , mainly due to the fact that they are crippled when it comes to eating , in some cases where its not so serious , they do survive the stress and probably the pain/discomfort of the injury.

If possible try to make sure it gets enuff to eat at meal times and is not being bullied by others sharing the tank with him.

Maybe this is just my opinion, but..
If you find that the calvus can no longer it properly, and is probably in pain, i would euthenize him..
Put him in a bag of aquarium water and put him in the freezer. His motabolism just gets slowler and slower...
Really sorry to hear about your Calvus, they are great fish..

My calvus had the same problem. It seems like something in it's jaw slipped out. I actually had to catch it and pushed the bottom lip in and it fixed the problem. I know it sounds silly but it did work. It was still eating well just couldn't close it's mouth.

Ouch sounds painful

Personally I think its better to leave it as it is , doing what ikan described might do more harm than good. Might unduely stress the fish even more , or might cause further injury.
Just my personal opinion though .

I stand by my opinion.
If the fish can no longer eat, and you think it is in pain, no point in letting it go on living, of coz it will soon die anyway because it cannot eat...

this problem happens very often in fish with projectile mouth structures
there were a couple of instances i had to fix back the jaw &quot;manually&quot;

in your case, however, i will say it may be more due to dislocation perhaps from fights or swallowing food thats a little too big for it

this reply is late , how is the fish now?

if it persists, put the fish down like mez said. its better.
but just to clarify, the ice method is not the best way to kill a fish...for the fish though may seem to go into immediate shock, may still feel.

You can get a product called &quot;transmore&quot; in major arowana selling shops (eg C328, Dragons Home at bukit ho swee)
It is something like an anestesia used to sedate arowanas before operations. you can knock the fish out gradually using it, and use a razor to severe the blood vessels behind the gill. so far the best way for medium to large fish.
For small fish, you can kill them very quickly by smashing the head...messy, but actually most humane as death is fastest
