I intend to purchase an Eden 501 for my 1ft nano tank which has been reccommended by a lot of bros here.

When I visit Eden website http://www.edensrl.com/swf/eng/schede/501.htm . I find out that for Eden 501, the water from fish tank will first flow to the Ceramic rings chamber ( Biological filtration ), after that will go through the sponge ( mechanical filtration ). Is it this concept a bit wierd since normally mechanical filtration must be done 1st to remove all the dirts & particles, followed by biological ?! Somemore most of the dirt will be trapped in the Ceramic rings chamber. Cleaning of it will also swep out all the beneficial bacterias....

May be some bros who have been using Eden 501 can lighten me a bit on this issue?

    Really appreciated

Hi catohcat, my understanding is that the ceramic ring is there to breakdown the flow of the water and let the dirt sediment at the base of the filter. The sponge is there to cultivate the bacteria for biological filteration as well as polish the water before it flow out of the filter.

you can change around whatever you want to suite your need. My 501 filter media arrangement is: in -> sponge -> ceramic/biohome -> out

hey bro do u think eden 501 is suitable for 1.5ft cube tank (approximate 98litres)? normally people recommend a filter with flow rate 3 times of it capacity

my personal opinion, nope, not enough. I'm using 2213 for my 1.5x1x1.2(H) tank but I have internal reactor that slow down the flowrate a bit. I use 501 for 1ft cube.

Flowrate 3 times the capacity only for shrimp tank. For fish tank it must be 6-10 times

    ??

I only understood some fundamentals regarding wattage per gallon, fauna, but flowrate ? Is there a rule of thumb to follow for flowrate vs capacity as well ?

read somewhere, it is about 4 to 5 time your tank volume. However, the flowrate will reduce when you use external/internal reactor and chiller.

Sorry to hijack this thread... i'm currently using an external filter and the noise is getting 'unbearable'. How is the noise situation with the Eden 501 (totally quiet?) 'cause i'm considering switching to that?
    Thanks in advance.

I've got two Eden 501 running in the room I am sleeping in. And I am quite sensitive to noise.

As for the noise.. for me it's unhearable.
Btw as I know from Italian EDENSrl manufacturer, parts for EDEN501 are manufactured in the same factory as EHEIM parts.

And as for the price I bought one approx. for 31USD (totally I took twelve pieces for friends, but it didn't has any fluence for price).. pretty cheap compared to eheim classic series which is twice more expensive in our country.

    Regards
    Lukas

the ceramic rings will not clog easily like, say, eheim substrate pro.
so the design the spong last to "polish" the water before it goes back to the tank.
however, if you want to reduce the frequency of the cleaning of the sponge you can add a pre-filter.
what i use is a sponge filter from C328.
its a simple spong filter design and fits the tubing.
i cannot remember the brand but its going for a dollar plus.
it has an L-shaped hard plastic with a sucker at the short side of the "L".
just get the tubing, cut to length required.
it fits the eden L-shaped connector directly.
