nice nanos. Prefer the one with APP! Hows the shrimps? Doing fine?

Hi All,
Attached are photographs of my 2 nano shrimp tanks:
1) 1.5 months old 25cm rectangular tank beside my bed.
2) 2 weeks old ikea jar tank in office.
Both tanks have no filter attached, use only GEX substrate (red coloured packaging) without additional fertilisation through water column, carry out 30% water change weekly. The rectangular tank has a clip-on PL light.

Adoketa, Breitbinden, Paciquamis, Diplotaenia, Elizabethae, Mendezi, Inka, Agassizi, L046, L066, Crystal Red Shrimps
nice tanks, care to share what plants you have in both tanks? i quite like the purple.. or is it brown plants?
the ikea jar concept is very unique! Very retro look!! It will look superb if used as betta-jar.
nice setup. your lights, soil and tank is exactly the same as my experimental tank ...but my setup is pathetic compared to yours ..

hmmm the green cup in the office tank pic looks familiar. Army cup?

Hi All,
The shrimps are healthy, I started with 10 (3 were pregnant already when I bought them), now I probably have at least 40 (of which 6 are from the original batch, 4 others already left the world peacefully without a trace, aka MIA).
The 25cm tank was infected by water flea and flat worm (both are not fancied as food by the fishes in my tank), so I bought 3 boraras brigittae (I think, from Polyart) but found them to be ineffective as predators. However, they are quite hardy and survived well in the filterless tank. I then bought 3 galaxy rasbora to see if they were more effective predators but ended up with 2 MIA (sorry guys, I know they are endangered now but did not know they are that sensitive and could not do well in my tank (or did they jumped out?!?!!?!?)). I reduced feeding and it seemed to help to resolve the flat worm problem. However the water flea are really difficult to resolve since I can only choose fish which have mouth smaller than my baby shrimps. However I must comment that the nerite snails added were really effective for controlling brown algae on glass surfaces.
The ikea tank being in the office has a lower water temperature and did not have any additional lights attached. Perhaps this help to prevent the various problems I encountered for my 25cm tank (no water flea, flat worm and algae spotted so far). The 8 baby shrimps transferred over are doing well with no casualties yet. Another interesting challenge was to aquascape it such that it would look nice no matter how you turn the tank.
The GEX soil is quite good in my opinion, the plants are growing quite healthy although I didn't add additional fertiliser (except for the APP which had pockets of pale leaves and currently started having leaves rotting and detaching after I did a massive trimming exercise). The cryptocorynes in each of the tank are doing well (especially for those ikea tank which are sprouting lots of new leaves after an initial period of rotting). The ludwigia brevipes is a recent addition because I thought it complemented the aquascape, having the same shade of brown as the cryptocoryne (any suggestion on which crypt is it?) but yet contrasted with the cryptocoryne in terms of shape of leaves. The brown colour of the 2 plants in my opinion also contrasted well with the green colour of the APP.
Yes, I am still using my army mug after so many years.

regarding the APP, i'm assuming it took just 1.5 months to grow such a nice lawn? Is that the Atman 7w lights you are using? If it is, its the same one i have and i'm having doubts about how strong the light actually is. How long do you leave your lights on?

Hi Kuruppa,
The APP took less than a month to cover the base, in fact it was so thick that I had already done one round of major trimming to it. I can't remember the brand of the light (bought at C328 for $12.50 I think), the light bulb label indicated that it is 20W. The lights are on for 8 - 10 hrs per day for my tank.

?? 25cm length tank can keep cherries ? i had mine at 9L and water parameters shift too much to allow much inhibitants. Looks like i didn't have much luck as you guys![]()

Hi,
Attached is an updated photograph of my 25cm tank with a black background (formed with my "Jimbo" aeroplane brand black shorts).

Is the PL light tank in an aircon room? There is no fan, your tank would be heated up by the light.

Hi,
your APP growth is quite good! Looks great!
Cheers!
Will the water fleas have any adverse effects on shrimp tanks? I saw water fleas in colorful's shrimp tanks too..At first look i though they're newly hatched shrimps or something..

Hi,
My APP looks fine from far but a closer look will reveal pockets of melting APP.
I suspect it is the nerite snail since only 10% of the APP seems to suffer from this while the others are doing fine and flowering. For my setup, the APP need to be trimed at least once a month.
For flat worm, I think frequent water change and controlled feeding have helped to keep them under control. As for water flea, I recently took a closer look at them and think that they are actually "Seed Shrimp, Ostracoda" instead (Bugs you might encounter in your aquarium ). I have seen my Galaxy Rasboras chasing them occasionally, shallowing them before spitting them out alive, hopefully this will at least injure them and kill them eventually. I have not seen them affecting my plants or shrimps yet.

This is an update of the shrimp tank I have in the office:
The tank is doing really good, cryptocorynes are growing strong, shrimps are multiplying until I fear of overcrowding now!

WOW!!! I love that jar very much!!! Amazingly beautiful![]()

Is 30% weekly WC able to sustain for the jar, since you have shrimps multiplying ?
It would be interesting to know, and looks to be a nice way to make use of freely available jars.![]()

I will have to give away some shrimps to my colleagues (provided they decide to pick up this hobby too!) to address the overcrowding issue.
The jar is round and thus with a driftword inside, the aquascaping looks different when you view from another angle and there are problem of reflections too. I am trying to capture a best view for this "tank", hopefully the below photograph do more justice to it!
