mario,
imho, i don't think this will shorten the life of the filter.
otherwise why would ehiem design their filter to give you have the ability to spoil it?
btw i'm using the same filter for a Fiveplan 2 ft tank.
so far, about 6 months, no issues.
hi, i using 1 2028 filter on my 3ft plant tank. just set up, only moss and 10 oto. i suppose by adjustiing the lever where is inlet and outlet is, should ablt to control the flow rate. but if i adjust to the lower, will it shorten the live of the filter?
thanks

you can adjust the flow rate by throttling the outlet tap.
do not throttle the inlet tap.

Not sure why 1 2028 needs to be tuned down for a 3 ft tank.
I have a 1mx0.55x0.7 tank and I have 1 2028, 1 2217, 1 1500L power head (to drive a fluidizer filter) and 2 1L polishing filter (if required).
Still no big issue with current flow.
If you think it is too much, can always direct your rainbar to face the wall to reduce the impact of the flow.
It depends on your tank and what you want.
