Till now still sourcing for a good pair from overseas....

Hey Eugene, any good suggestions on what species to breed?

I thought you have already made up your mind on good quality Ap. cacatuoides?

It all depends on your intention. For example, are you breeding them for monetary rewards, or for the interest in keeping them where breeding would just be an added bonus. These will dictate which species you should keep.

Yes. I've decided on A. Cacatuoides because I'll like to share good quality specimens with new apisto keepers and also to influence and attract more people into apisto keeping.

There's only 2 tanks in my bathroom, doesn't take up much space

I find that the wild one isn't to my liking, its colorless although the prices have dropped a lot for a wild pair

I still like colorful apistos with an extended finnage, thats why have decided on A. Cacatuoides 'Triple Red'

beautiful and colourful apistos with an extended finnage = A. bitaeniata

but be warned their fry take ages to grow to a saleable size, so if the purpose is for monetary profit, as mentioned by genes, it gives slower returns

I have considered A. Bitaeniata previously but it seems that I have no fate with this species.....never get to breed any of the 3 bitaeniata species I've kept in the past, so I kind of given up on this species for now

Maybe will consider it again in the future, since I must agree with the amazing beauty of the Bitaeniatas!

Ok. There are only 3 variants available right? Triple red, orange flash and wild.

Remember this fellow http://www.rva.jp/apisto/21153.htm you mention before? Wild but yet quite colourful. From what I see, Triple red is not colourful but it's about the patterns.

In addition to the red (triple red) and orange (orange flash), I remember
also seeing some with yellow finnage and tails? Quite nice too, I must say!

Cacatuoides with yellow coloration are results of too much inbreeding....
    there isn't any yellow variant of Ap. Cacatuoides ;

Thanks for sharing info - didn't know that
They look pretty normal (not deformed, etc) to me and the
colour is pretty attractive with a bright yellow and the
usual black markings similar to the red ones.
    Thought that they were selective-bred.
    Thanks again, for highlighting.

If you are seriously into breeding, then 2 tanks will not be enough. To maintain a line, you need 16 tanks to hold up to 4 generations. I believe the same applies to all species, regardless of guppies or dwarf cichlids.

Buying a pair and getting a spawn or two from the pair is a different story.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

And you need more than 1 pair. Three pairs in fact to sustain the gene diversity.

For Wild fish, shouldn't be an issue if getting from same source. If they are related somehow, then you are very heng.

But if it is strain bred fishes like Triple Reds, then same source will generally point to the possibility of same brood. But then, locally, even if you go different shops to buy, especially those that you see now, they are possibly from same source.
