    Brown algae = diatoms

    Too much silica in water

    Too little light

Soln: Increase lighting, and remove as much as possible my hand

    Otos!!! Get otos.

What do you mean by too little light? I am now under the attack of brown algae too, and I have 2 X 36W PL lights. On from 3pm to 1am (10 hrs) Do I need another PL light or have it on longer?

Also, too much silica? From where?

    How big is yr tank?

if your a 3 feet tank with only 2 X36W then it is way too little

Go with the guide of abt 3W/gal

And make sure they are spread out evenly = even light distribution. Else the shaded area will also have diatoms

    Got a few websites: Chuck's

Search the forum, sorry can't help you in the net area. Quite new here as well.

I think normally they are known as Ottos and not Otos. Anyway, Ottos is the short form for the word "Ottocinclus". They are very good algae eaters, specifically, brown algae growing on the sides of the tank or on the leaves of aquatic plants.

The Otto looks like a tadpole and the local fish shops call it "Xiao Jing Ling" which means something like "Little Imp". Be careful when buying Ottos from fish shops as they die easily if not properly conditioned.

Gan at Lim Chu Kang sells them for $1 a piece. Very fair price and his fish are very stable.

Timebomb, sorry, gotta correct you... it's one 't' only. Otocinclus affinis. []

Route, sorry should have been clearer. Look in the AQ gallery for the fish gallery and look for Otocinclus affinis under catfish.

No... it has been Otocinclus all this while. 'Ottos' is probably a mis-spell from pronounciation. Anyway, it does not matter if its 'Otos' or 'Ottos' cos its a common name.

However, for sci. name, IMO, we should try to get it correct as much as we can.
