Just checking if anyone has recommendations for a setup that's strongly geared towards nitrate reduction.

anyone tested jbj's bionitratex, its highly expensive at $35 for 200gm. just wondering if it works as claimed.

How about trying BioHome. < $20 for 330grams. According to packaging, i think it's 300g per 1000 litres of water or something like that. Claims to reduce nitrate thru nitrification too. But needs total darkness to work optimally.

Oh forgot. A 330g packet is about what you can comfortably hold if you cup your hands together. So if their claims are true, you can filter a 1000l aquarium with a Eheim 2231... thereotically, and not taking into account the flow rate/circulation requirements.

Does this de-nitrate thingy need to be replaced when it worn out or something? Any time frame?
    Cheers!!

No. It does not absorb the nitrates... Can't remember the exact details but it also allows bacteria that digest nitrates to thrive as well.

the amt of media needed in this case doesnt make much significance unless the flow is indicated for the 1000l claim

because the amount of water passing thru the media determines how much reduction goes on per time

    Thanks for the explanation, LSZ.

BioHome (claims) it's widely used by fishery industry. In those cases, I guess the water is not as oxygen rich as planted tank water and the filters are different.

I'm trying out Dennerle's Biotrop Stabiliser which also claims to nitrify nitrates to nitrogen. Just started last week. Will post report in due time.

Costs $73 for the pack that treats 400l of water. Suppose to last 5 months. The smaller pack treats 100l, proportionally, costs slightly more.

fbf is supposed to be denitrifying as well. any denitratifying is incidental (eg: no nitrite/nh4 for plants, so they go after nitrate).

I also bought 1kg biohome to split between my two filters.
(incidentally, c328 is the only place I can find it cheapest so far.)

that's why I'm still looking for sulphur beads to build a sulphur denitrator

    Wah!!

so effective ah? anyone knows where can get it at the cheapest rate? cos it's getting abt time for me to replace the Ehfisubstrat in my 2028 liao... preferably enuf to fill up 2 out of 3 media buckets in the 2028.

btw need to change BioHome every few mths like EhfiSubstrat or not?

ok coz the distinction in between a balanced "planted" and " non planted" is not big enough to render one more suitable for denitrifying bacteria ....
because denitrifying bacteria need an extreme case of almost total oxygen starvation.which we almost will not encounter unless in dead spots in the tank.

planted or not is just how we achieve a balance in water parameters...the end result is the same. But yes the timing of chemical changes is different.

i am curious how the product can work in a canister...there must be a valid reason for their claim

Guess the only way to know if their claims work, is to test the products.

    biohome says no.
seachem denitrate, suspect its just mini ehfisubstrat, cos I saw this

the high prosity of denitrate supports the proliferation of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria....
even when exhausted as an organic ADSORBENT, denitrate continues to ber an excellent support for the biological filter and does not have to be removed..

in anycase, I'm tossing it out. its been in for quite some time and since it doesn't come in filter bags, its very messy.

    my 2026 configuration is:
    bottom to top.
    basket 1-
    coarse blue pad
    fine filter wool

    basket 2-
    JBL clearmec x2 packs
    biohome
    coarse blue pad
    -
    fine filter floss pad

basket 1 does mechanical filtering, based on the concept of

    ----------------
    2028 -
    planning for
    basket 1
    coarse blue pad
    ceramic rings
    --
    basket 2
    bioporous quartzite
    biohome on top

    basket 3
    clearmec x2
    rest of biohome

    fine filter floss pad

Maybe can try Seachem Matrix, it claims to reduce nitrate and does not need to be replaced. Price wise it's similar to Eheim Efhisubstrat. I am trying 1 ltr one on Eheim 2213.
