    I'm a horti user. I don't like root monster
when I notice some kind of bba outbreak, I search the rear among the stem plants and voila, one root monster popping out of the substrate

sounds like what i had with up brand sticks. what worked for me ... more frequent partial water (twice a week) change, more floating plants like hornworts and frogbits (thks to fellow forumers) and co2 to get the other plants to thrive. last but not least, patience. will take a few weeks to rid of those darn bba that cover even my styrofoam background in thickness. prawns, sae etc won't help much in controlling a bloom. they are only good imho for prevention of sparse algae.

    Ryan,
siphon or manually remove as much as possible the root monster bits on the gravel surface
change water more frequent to dilute the nutrients.
add frogbits as they suck up nitrates fast.
    increase the co2 rate.
