They will show their breeding colours even when no mates are around. Its just their way of showing that they are ready to breed.
Hi guys, I have a question which I can't find any information from the books or internet apisto articles. I have two female Apistogramma agassizii whose bodies are always yellow (one of them even has a black spot at times) eventhough their mates were dead at least 3 weeks ago.
I thought they only show this yellow colour in the presence of their mates right?![]()

I spoke to Biotope boss Raymond, but they also run out of adult male A. agassizii. The females are truly ready to breed, I have seen them bashing all the surrounding fish. Maybe its the food, so far I feed them only Tetra bits and Tetra pro.
It may sounds incredible, but can dried food really make those female fish feel "sexy"?![]()
You can try NKS. I was there 2 weeks ago & wanted to buy a pair of A. agassizii. Unfortunately they have a tankful of male A. agassizii 'Flamingo', so i didn't buy.
Thanks for your information RHX, however when I went to NKS this afternoon, most of the apistos are gone. Only a few isolated pieces are left.
