Hi guys, I need recommendation for filters. I got moss (2 wire meshes tied with moss and 2 DW, one tied with DW and a couple of hornworts) in a 2ft tank. I got 2 sponge filters running in the tank. Would like to know if sponge filters are good enough to handle if I'm going to breed shrimps in this tank.

If not, which cannister filter should I go for in my 2ft tank? Budget around 1 blue note.

If your plan it is to breed shrimps, then I guess your next worry will be on shrimplets getting sucked into your filter. I would say go with your current setup. Sponge filters are gentle of tiny creatures.

But I'm worried at the inability of sponge filter to handle heavy bioload.. And I guess I could attach a sponge to the inlet of the filter to prevent any shrimplets from getting sucked into the filter...

You are planning for the tank to be a 'breeding tank' right?
Maybe you can give us an idea of what the tank will house.

hi guys, i got eden 501 already. Would like to ask you guys some questions. The rainbar is supposed to face up or down? For the inlet, how to prevent the shrimplets from being sucking into the filter? As for the last question, the cover area seems to be leaking at one part, should i bring back to the shop?

    Hi

I feel Eden 501 is insufficient for a 2ft tank. You will need at least Eheim 2213 or Eheim 2232.

If it's for a 2 ft tank with moss and shrimps, the turn over rate need not be that high. Whilst I can under the need for a higher flow rate for some setups, especially for higher bioload, I was wonder why wouldn't the Eden 501 be enough for bryant_16's tank? Can elborate?

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Hi Benny/ Bryant_16

Personally, i did use an Eden 501 for my 25cm cube tank. After a while, the flowrate tends to reduce. Basically, for a 2ft tank of 60cm, I strongly feel the flowrate should be faster in order for good water circulation.

My opinion for getting a larger/ better filter: -

    1) Flowrate adjustment. If you have a 2213 or 2232/2234, you can reduce the flowrate but for eden 501, you cannot increase the flowrate.

    2) Perfomance. High flowrate will enable better water circulation. No dead spots.

    3) Larger compartment. Able to load more bio-rings, wools.

    4) Easier for repair/ part replacement. Eheim has 2/3 year warranty and easier to get part replacement. For Eden, I dont think there is any warranty and possible to find replacement parts?

    5) Flexibility. With 2213 or 2232/2234, you can have the flexibility of upgrading your Fauna/ Flora. Unless you want to keep shrimps and moss for long term, then decide to have a larger filter in future if you want higher flowrate?

    6) Possiblilty of using a reactor? I presume you are using a diffuser? If you intend to use a reactor, the flowrate will be further reduce.

    7) Intention to connect to a chiller if you decide to keep CRS? Eden 501 flowrate is not sufficient to drive a chiller?

I presume the current price of the Eheim 2213 is about $100. For another $50, the answer is obvious for me.

Our advise are for you to consider and decide. The final decision lies with exactly what you want.

    Hi Byrant_16

Sorry, I didnt know you already bought the Eden 501. Since you have purchase it, I dont see any advantage to change your filter. Stick to it and upgrade when you feel it doesnt support your requirement. My recommendations are for you to decide before you purchase your filter.
