    Hi,

First and foremost, Happy Deepavali all !!.

Hmmm.. Woke up in morning, noticed the female cuckatoo was yellow !!. So happy and also a heavy downpour occured in bishan area, chua chu kang and someother areas. Really heavy, something struck my mind. Rain = wet/rainy season, apistos have a high chance of breeding. Knowledge from the apistopapas here. You know who im talking about aye.

So after i reached home after meetin a buyer of my fishin tackle box. At arnd 2pm+, still raining then. I changed 40% water from my 2ft. A.Cacutuoide double red pair. Stared at the female for awhile. They stare back at me, so i went to get some bw for them. They ate it gladly, taught by the apistopapas here not to stare at them for long time.

Then.. 6-7pm came, i fed again. They ate it with such vigour like so shiok liddat. Lookin at the female makes me so happy and say BANANRIFIC. Though not so yellow like a banana but it sure is in breedin mode. Told myself, since they're in breeding mode. I`ll do regular water changes of say 10-20% everyday to boost the mode, make them happy. Well did it then......

Surf internet, chat online. Till arnd 12+. I went to look at my apistos, this time they were restin on the big papa"biggest rock i have frm ks. 3+kg". I moved my finger and tab my thumbs in front of the tank, they stood still. So different cause the female stays motionless.

So i decided to on the light, and inspected closer. FWAH !! Big blackheads'Pardon me disgustin'. So happy that i jumped arnd and cheered apisto mama give birth liao!!. Lucky me parents away otherwise think im mad. They're not cherry red but arnd yellowish colour, not so banana look alike colour. But not white thats for sure !!.

So now's around 3am plus liao. Thats all from me to all of u. Sorry for the long winded story and if u dun understand it. I would be glad to clear yr doubts.

    Thanks
    Thanks & Regards,

congrats, but I'm sure the female need alittle privacy
of her own. ask any breeder, and they might tell u
staring at them gives the fish unneeded stress.

    Good Afternoon,

Thanks for the well-wishes, Hmmm. Stare for awhile only ? Say 8secs ? I guess also cannot but too excited lar, Well sad to say the eggs are all eaten up by the mama.

Im all nt despaired cause after readin thru thekrib.com and the past few aq threads bout apisto breeders. This is the norm, so im not sad at all !! Cause the mama apisto's still new to all this.

Once again, i`ll be waitin for the rain or some luck to be showered upon me. Pics of my tank should be up in arnd 1 weeks time.

    Cheers
    Thanks & Regards,
    Trevor

whether the female is a good mum or simply lack
of the experience for the first time. give her time
and u shall find that out.its common to be unsuccessful,
so dun need to be dishearted... she will be able to breed
again soon, one thing to trigger spawn is water change.. dun
need to wait till the next rain falls.. but give her another 2weeks
to be ready, fatten her up

Don worry lah, i aint disheartened. After readin thru the past threads abt apisto here in AQ. I know its the norm, and i was joking about the rainfall. HeHeHe. Will do water change regularly and how to fatten her up when the male alwaes wack more food then her ? What do u suggest ?

And also the eggs that were hatched in the wee hours was slightly yellowish more on the dark side. Isit normal for the eggs to be this colour first then slowly become cherry red ?

    Thanks. Go take nap.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Trevor

the down-side of very frequent breeding esp when using young adult pairs is that their growth (esp the female) may be affected.. ie the young parents may have slower or even inhibited growth compared to when they are not breeding so frequently.

so after you can be sure they breed true, it is a good practice to rest them for a period of time

Trevor, Eggs will not change colour when they starts to mature.

When they are laid red it'll be red while when it is laid white, it'll stay white and will not change to red as time goes by.

red eggs determine by the amount of carotene in the body of the female, the more carotene rich food comsume she'll have more chances of laying red eggs.

egg colour doesn't affect much on the brood. I've seen white eggs hatch too. So long as the eggs ain't fungus or opague white.

Doing so many sessions of Water change is very good just that are you able to keep doing it. Usually you'll slacken and not do so many WC as before it's always an initial start.

Anyway good luck in breeding apisto =) COndition the female and be ready for the nx batch very soon.
    Cheers!

just a curious question.. will the color of the eggs affect the brood, in terms of having a more vibrant breed? me know nuts on cichlids.. thus the silly questions...

The female after eating the eggs still thinks that she has a brood so she will stay like that for a few days before changing back into her normal colouration. It's very normal.

They act as thou they have a brood, i'm not sure why is it like that but maybe we can conclude with many people that this thing happen as part of their character.

regarding kel question on more vibrant breed, the answer is yet to be known, i've seen female with white eggs and still able to lead clouds of fry later on with no side effect on the fry. Some apisto lay only dull white eggs like the A.trifasciata where their habitat has a sandy substrade, to hide their egg colours from predators they eggs blend in with the sandy substrade.
    Cheers!
