of course.
obstructions will prevent water from flowing evenly inside the tank, resulting in dead spots.
try moving the drift wood or filter to imporve the flow. or add a small power head.
I have a small 30cm tank. and my hang-on filter was placed on 1 side of the tank. substrate at that side appeared to be cleaner than those another side.( I have a driftwood right at center of my tank) i shifted my filter to the middle. but it doesn't seem to help.
just want to ask whether the position of the filter affects the filtration.
meanwhile, i'm going to do some research myself
grateful for any kind of advice.

thanks for your prompt response. what does a power head do? expensive? i shall try find out. thanks alot
It is a just a water pump that sucks in water at one end and ejects it at another creating a flow.
You can use it to drive a reactor, a pre-filter, or just move water around etc
But it would take up space and make your tank clutered (unless you are able to cleverly conceal it) - if you already have a reactor, a rainbar, a thermometer and so on.
Anyway, I do use a small power head (200L/hr) to increase circulation on my 1ft)
