    Hey guys,

Sorry for not updating, I gave up on keeping Crystal Reds. They don't breed even though its at 24 degree celsius. I think its because of the acidity of my tank. I refuse to change my substrate from GEX to other brands. Moss are thriving but shrimps are dying. Well, maybe its not for me.

    Happy Crystal Red keeping!

    regards,
    Ben

    Hi Benjee

Sad to hear that you are stopping to keep CRS.

But all these should be kept as a learning curve for keeping these wonderful pet rather than disappointment.

When i first started out in my 4ft tank, i kept malayan shirmp 10 bucks for 100(cheap heehee) everything is good until i put in anti algae / anti snail medication because my tank have algae & snail and bingo all my shrimp is dead.
I search the net and found the answer, no medication of any type is recommended if shrimp is kept.

Then i started buying red cherry shrimp. $50 for 100shrimp as my tank is big, 100 shrimp is like 20 shrimp in the tank which is heavily planted, thus i bought at least 300 - 400 red cherry shrimp in it. Everything is again fine for months and the shrimps really breed fast until again one day after reading the web on dosing fert, i bought from NA 4 types mainly Potassium, Nitrate, Sulphate & Magnesium. On top of my regular dosing of Seachem- Florish, excel & bateriallife, i started dosing all the 4 chemical the amt stated on the bottle. And next day when i look into my tank, my heart broken, almost half of the population was wiped out. Immediate water change was carried out but ended up with about one quarter survive.
I then learn how to dose these sparingly with trial & error on my poor shrimp.

All these are just the experience for me before i start to keep my CRS.
Now my tank have about 400-500 or more cherry shrimp plus 70 - 100 CRS all lives happily ever after.

My rules: I do a one quarter water change every week. Dose Seachem Excel, Flourish & baterial after every water change. i never need to measure my PH & ammonia level. Dose the fert i bought from NA monthly. No tank mates for my shrimps except Ottos.
All these rules seems to work best for me and my shrimps.

Hope all these is of help to you for keeping these wonderful CRS in future.
