Hello all, some of you might remember that i have been asking questions about a shrimp tank not too long ago. Following recommendations from the other shrimp keepers in this forum, I am upgrading to a bigger tank, 40x28x30, for easier upkeep of the shrimps. I will mostly be keeping cherry shrimps and have some questions about the tank which I hope that some of you may be able to answer.
What kind of plants/moss should I put into the tank and where can I get them?? I have tried looking in the marketplace but lately no one is selling any. I have also went to C328 before to look at the water plants, but being the beginner that I am, was unable to tell apart the plants.
Should I get a stronger filter for the tank? Currently I am using a Jebo hang on filter, the kind that costs $10. Is it powerful enough for my tank? Furthermore, do I still need to add any additional 'stuff', the stones that apparently clears the water better or something(sorry, I'm not too sure what it is too), to the filter?

maybe some driftwood with moss tied on it would look great. can easily buy from driftwood from NA and moss too.
the hang on filter is barely enough to keep the water in good shape unless you keep only a few shrimps. Maybe an Eden 501 should do a better job handling higher bioload.

Hi there boobilly, glad you decided to get a larger tank, is yours a GEX tank by any chance? I'm personally using a white base L size GEX tank.. It's doing well in my room..
Anyways, as others have mentioned, it's way better to have an external canister filter as the filtration capacity is much better.. (although that said, I do have a smaller GEX tank, approx 10litre, running on only a very small sponge filter..)
If you do decide to get an external canister (either new or from another forumer), do get a sponge (tight one) to cover the inlet of the filter as you don't want your shrimps/shrimplets to get sucked into the filter..heh..
Oh yes, with regards to what you can put inside, I'd suggest you get driftwood with moss tied on it, not only can the shrimps feed off the micro-algae that grows on the moss, but can also hide under the wood.. Think it makes them feel safer and less stress..
Just look out for people selling in the forum or go to LFS to buy one..

ok thank you. Mine is a GeX tank, and yes, I do think that the filter is too small. The only moss I have now is the marimo moss ball, about 4 pieces of them. I did tear up 2 of them to tie on driftwood, but the tank still looks bare. I think I'm going to buy more moss on mesh to over the back.

ok, should be getting Taiwan moss soon. Thanks for the explanation. So will the shrimps actually feed off the marimo?
And another problem, my tank temperature is at an average of 28 degrees in the mornings, while it is about 25 degrees at night due to the aircon. Is this all right for the shrimps?
Yes shrimps will feed on those algae ball. Temperature is ok. Ensure that your tank is properly cycled before adding your cherries.

Haha, thank you, I have put the shrimps in on Friday night, and am glad to say that currently, all of them are still alive and well. One of the two pregnent shrimps have already given birth. Thanks to all for your kind guidence!
I've just started on shrimps too, I've put in quite a fair bit of moss, and they like it really well. I guess it's the micro-organism that lives on it that they are searching for. So moss is a great addition for the shrimps
