hmm.. The people there told me they're zebra otos. Anyway, they are too expensive for a newbie like myself.

Judging from the availability of Otocinclus cocama (zebra oto) in other LFS in recent days, you should be correct.

However, there is also possibility that there is a new shipment of Parotocinclus sp. "Peru" just recently. But they look really different, so I think someone could be confused, and besides, you aren't wrong.

    I could be wrong then.

It looks more like Otocinclus cocama, definitely not Parotocinclus sp. "Peru".

I have seen the 'zebra oto' a few years back. I thought the spots look a bit different.

I asked Ben, and he says they are 'tiger oto'.

I guess I should catch up with some reading after a long absence from AQ.

Don't worry about it. Common names can be confusing, besides, zebra/tiger terms have been known to be used interchangably. Hence the reason we all should try to use scientific names instead of common names.

Just came back from C328 & Polyart.
On the way back, just happenned to spot some Tiger Otos at Polyart.
They are in smaller holding tanks near the entrance (left-hand side).
I can confirmed that they are indeed Tigers and not Zebras
as I had bought the 2 types and both species are in my tank now.
As such, there is a good chance that the Petmart sighting could
really be Tiger Otos since there is a confirmed shipment as per
    the Polyart stocks.
I also expect Ben to "know" his fish.
    For those interested, better hurry.
There is slightly less than 10 left and there is a "special" beautiful
WHITE-SPOTTED Tiger available at duble the price.
The stocks this time round also looks healthier and slightly larger
    than the last batch.

Uhm, so can't there be BOTH shipments of Otocinclus cocama (zebra oto) and Parotocinclus sp. "Peru" (tiger oto) in the same period at Petmart? If I have been a pain in the back, please accept my apologies.

If that's the case, thread starter MAY not be wrong (after all, he has been told that there are zebra otos by the staff themselves), so it is rather pointless to carry on arguing "yes" or "no".

Someone who knows fishes well should go Petmart and confirm. (hint: illumnae)

There shouldn't be any confusion between Zebras and Tigers.
Zebras otos are so distinctive with their characteristic stripes and
size-wise, they are usually much bigger (or longer) than the Common
Oto. Tigers are generally much, much smaller in size in the same
comparison to the common oto. It is quite unusual they both are
available at the same time though the C328 Zebras are no longer
    available.

Yes, they are different, but they can be both available during the same period. FYI, Otocinclus cocama is available in a lot of places right now.

So short of someone who knows fishes well go and confirm it at Petmart, all these talk are just.... talk.

haha you flatter me Quixotic. I'm just a normal hobbyist, and my knowledge of fish is nowhere near as extensive as yours or many others on the forum

I think you're probably right by saying that the ones at polyart are tiger otos (Otocinclus Cacoma) I thought that the zebra otos now look "different" cause i remember many years back (about 8yrs) that the zebras have THICK and distinct black and white strips. The strips of the present "zebras" is thinner and look more like tiger strips than zebra.

If there's indeed a difference than we the fish hobbists should standardise among ourselves and call it Oto Cacoma - Zebra OR Oto Cacoma - Tiger to prevent confusion.

And call the "tiger" otos - paraotocinclus sp as JUST Paraotocinclus sp

Very confusing discussions here, but here's what I saw at Polyart few days ago.

-Otocinclus sp. "Spotted" (very last specimen; not cheap at all for its small size)
-Otocinclus Cocama (A lot of specimens for you to choose)
-Parotocinclus sp. (Very limited pieces left)

Oh no, the thread has just gotten worse than I thought. The first thing everyone should do is to read carefully, including the date and LFS of the thread title.

Take note that the thread title is referring to Petmart, not C328, not Polyart, not anywhere else. If you are talking about sightings at some other LFS, then inevitably someone will get confused.

Secondly, there is the reason why using scientific names are strongly encouraged. Not that trade names cannot be used, but they are as confusing as hell, and sometimes used interchangably too often. Therefore, using their scientific names would greatly help. However, one has to know the fish and scientific names in the first place.

Lastly, when in doubt, a picture helps.

For those who aren't sure, here are the fishes:

Otocinclus cocama (known as zebra oto in the trade, image courtesy of valice)

Parotocinclus sp. "Peru" (known as tiger oto in the trade, image courtesy of valice)

And as I have said again, it is possible to have BOTH shimpments of Otocinclus cocama and Parotocinclus sp. "Peru" at the same period, just NOT on the same day that someone has spotted one or the other. So if someone else were to have spotted a different fish some other day and reported it on this thread, then inevitably everyone will get confused!

Please do start another sighting thread if the dates or LFS stated in the title are different from what you saw.

I apologised if I'm adding further to the confusion here
regarding the identity of the mystery "Tiger" Oto at PetMart.
As mentioned previously, I had not seen the "Zebra/Tiger?" Otos
at PetMart but had bought some from Polyart.
Looking back at my fish (3 left) and some of the pics,
I have a growing suspicion that it is not the "normal" Tiger Otos
that we used to see in the past and I myself had bought
as recent as last year at C328. Had a look at PlanetCatfish site
on Paratocinclus and they did show a few Sp's apart from Sp(3)
which is the Tiger Oto that we had seen in SG.
The one I have now seem to match Parato Sp(1) but the pic is
    too small to be certain.
One of the reason is that the Tiger Otos that are seen in the pics
and those that I had are of a "brownish" mottled sort whereas this
lot I had are of the darker greyish/blackish look. The body shape and contours are also different.
I would like to invite someone to my place to take a pic
and share it with Bros here.
As they say, a pic is worth a thousand words and it would solve
once and for all what it actually is.

I apologised for not being able to do it myself as I don't have the
    equipment and knowhow.
I am staying in Tampines and can be contacted at 94303902.
